Do you have to drive to ride?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do you have to drive to ride?

Can you ride right from your house? Carry the bicycle down the stairs of your apartment and start to ride? Open the garage door and ride?

Or do you have to load the bicycle into the vehicle and drive to where you can ride?

If the latter is your situation, do you ride frequently? How do you fit riding into your life?

I usually just take my bike to the roof of my mansion, throw it in my helicopter, and take off from there.

I was actually looking for a real life answer rather than a dream world answer.

I ride out of the door. Unlike your place I have tarmac outside of my door. You thought about getting a cross bike?

I have a mtn bike, and have done some short mtn bike rides right from my doorstep. I'll probably start doing more of that as the daylight hours get shorter.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out how to fit road cycling into my day.

Im lucky to have one of those paved trails about half a mile from my house. Roll out the door. From that trail i ride either 6 miles to the Saturday group ride or 8 miles to the Sunday ride. During the week depending on what time i get out of work ill do a 17-25 mile ride out and back on it. So il be on the road bike about 4-5 times a week. Weekend rides are about 65-70 miles. I enjoy to ride and im not competitive. I just like to ride and keep up with the pack. On the road bike i hate driving to a ride unless its a century or destination ride thats 20+ miles away. The mountain bike i have to drive everywhere, all the good trails are an hour or so away.

If I want to go for a group ride I have to load up and drive either to Paragould 15mi or Jonesboro 30mi. But otherwise I can walk 200yards through the hay field to the road.

depends.

i have a few local loops i do regularly, but i also frequently throw my bike on the rack and take it on the road.

i am also fortunate to have some very rideable roads in close proximity to my workplace, so i'll put the bike in the car in the morning and ride after work sometimes.

i also bike commute to work several days a week during the warmer months.

i have a 45 min ride through the boring suburbs before getting to places with propper trees and the smell of cow poo. i tend to ride from the house but sometimes i'll drive out to the cow poo and start there. if i go to the park for park laps, i drive.

I have great road riding from my doorstep.
But need to ride well over an hour, or take regional rail, to access mediocre dirt trails. (sigh)

most of the group rides around me start about 10 miles away, so I ride. A few of them start at 8-10 pm so I drive to those, unless the route takes me somewhere that I drop off early and ride home, since I don't want to be out at midnight or later alone with the drunks. So yeah, open door and go for a ride.

I actually live on a portion of my normal 60k week ride. Open garage door, roll out, clip in and turn right. In those 60k I might see 10 cars, usually less.

The mountainbike trail is 1/2 mile up the road. There are others, of course, but I like the local trails a lot.

mountain biking really isn't much of an option unless you have big unfarmed countryside like a national park.

I have road riding out my door, but I sympathize with you when I'm feeling like riding on dirt. The closest decent trail to my house is about 8 miles away, however it is conveniently on my way to work. When I want to MTB, I take my bike and riding gear with me to work, change at work at the end of the day and then hit up the trail on the way home. When I lack time I do speedwork to get a good workout. I don't know if that helps you any. I know what it's like to be time crunched. I'm trying to fit riding while restoring a large 250 year old farmhouse and studying for a professional licensure exam. I never have much free time, but on the other hand, I'm never bored

It only takes me about 5 miles to get to quiet roads, so I don't see the point of driving. There is an MUP ~1 mile from here, but that thing is more dangerous than the roads, so I avoid it.

I'll drive to events or out of state for the occasional change of scenery. If I'm driving to a ride you know it's going to be a long one.

I can, but I live in Upper Bubbaville and I'm likely to get run over by a pickup truck. I bike commute however, and since my work is 74 miles from my house I load the bike on the car and drive 50 and ride 24 each way... daily.

I'm one of the lucky ones to be able to ride right out the door. Though, for real rides I need to go more south to get some more hills.

I hate to miss a club ride. But when I do , it's often when they have to drive to the starting point.. I just hate putting the bike atop the car, when I can just ride off without all that bother..

i have to drive, too many roads without shoulders, i take a 15 minute ride and i got a nice county road, newly paved, no cars, huge shoulder.

my other ride is at a state park along the beach, thats a 40 minute ride but well worth it
