Still quicker to stop and zip back up than to stop, pull it out of the pocket, orient it, slip it over your shoulders, and then zip it up.
Great minds think alike at the same time. (See my post above.)

And do you remember the thread where a few posters were saying how dangerous it is to take photos even with one hand while moving?

Oh yes, it's positively death-defying.

Why do men put on their pants/trousers/shorts and don’t zip up the fly? THAT is the question.

I almost never put a vest back on after I've taken it off, but that's because either I'm riding on a cool later afternoon and it only gets cooler, OR I'm riding on a day with a cool morning that gets warmer. One exception is at the top of one of the climbs that go over the Santa Cruz Mountains, when I start out on a warm day down below and climb up into cold fog. But I don't try to put on a vest on the fly.

But that's me and I don't do bike touring.

Oh! Just one more thing....

I PERSONALLY wouldn't ride with a completely unzipped vest, because flappy clothing bugs the hell out of me, but I realize this is my own peculiarity.

IMO, double zippers should be standard for cycling outerwear. Zip down from the top, up from the bottom and you get most of the ventilation w/o all the flap.

I have done it.

I discovered I am more visible on roads with heavy traffic. The flapping in the wind as annoying as it may be, does help with my visibility. Just a commuting trick. Sorry PC police, but I ride like I like.

The issue has nothing to do with “PC.” So much improper use of that term.

I have 2 vests and wear them most often during the shoulder seasons when it can be chilly to start a ride and it warms up between me getting hot and the temp increasing.
So for a morning ride, it makes a ton of sense to me.

Start with it zipped to fend off cold air/wind.
Unzip a bit as I warm up from riding
If the temp outside increased, unzip it all the way so I dont overheat.
I have a cycling wallet that sits in my back middle pocket- holds my phone and cards, etc. When I have a vest, that sits in the back vest pocket. It weighs enough that when the vest is unzipped it stays down on my back and the zipper parts are all that flutter behind me. It doesnt bother me and I doubt I am more than .08mph slower over the course of a few hours or riding.

Is it a vest or a gilet? That needs to be established. Hardmen wear gilets. Ordinary cyclists wear vests.

I have a jacket (actually two jackets) where the arms zip off. Does that make it a vest, a gilet, or a sleeveless jacket?

I do a few long organized rides in September-October. They start early (6-7) and it may be in the 40's or 50's, but warm up into the 70's.
Sometimes I will start with the jacket, then take off the sleeves, then finally put the sleeves back on and the whole thing folds into its own pocket and then goes in my jersey pocket.
(Sometimes someone at one of the rest stops will take it back to the home base for me)

What is the difference between a cycling vest and a gilet? I sometimes read cycling stuff in Japanese, where the cycling vest is almost always referred to as "gilet."

It’s not so tough being ordinary if you stick to Rule #5.

I have two gilvests. One is insulated front and back for warmth and the other has wind block panels in front with mesh in the back.
