Dyed leather bar wraps (VO elk hide) - Colnago Super update

Many of you saw pics of my Super earlier this year. I was happy with the VO elk hide bar wrap, but it wasn't a great color match for the dark brown Concor saddle (not even close, really.) So, I finally went down to my local leather store to ask for advice. Very pleased with this outcome. In these pics the saddle and bars look almost black, but they are both dark brown.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

This is the stuff I used - two coats of dye, and one top coat of resolene (acyrlic sealant.)

Yep done this many. Times on my shoes and wife's purses that she wanted a different color. You may get some color wash for a while though.

Perfect match. Well done, but I can't say I'm surprised. You do some good work, my man.

Oh, that is very nice!

The match is perfect now. Where did you purchase the wraps themselves? They look great and look like they would be very comfortable...

Very nice Alex. I'm gonna have to look for some of that dye to clean up the white tape on my Merckx. That looks like just the ticket.

Thanks. The wraps came from Velo Orange. A good rainy day project - the first side takes awhile. I wouldn't call it fun, but not impossible either. I'm considering ordering a set of black wraps for my Eddy Merckx.

White leather? Are you wanting to switch colors, or stay white? I remember using some white dye on my sneakers in the 80s. Results were mixed. I bet you have a saddlery/tannery somewhere out in North Bend.

Just my preference, NB, and the dye Alex used works just fine ...but I like the "oil based" Fiebing's. Your local leather shop may have both types.

Edit: Oh, white dye, NB? I wouldn't recommend it. Like Alex says, it is sketchy.

I've heard the oil-based stuff is better, too - my local tannery only had the alcohol base, though. That's why it required two coats (and more in some spots.)
