Got this 1994 Kona Kula (Kona's first aluminum MTB) with almost all original parts but beaten up for a great price. I had initially planned to restore it to its full original '90s appearance, but I needed a ride. So, I threw on this saddle, seatpost clamp, pedals, and wheelset. I'll gradually work on the full restoration over time...lets see.

The original highlights include a titanium handlebar, Shimano Deore XT components, and a Marzocchi XC 500 suspension fork.

A nice XC ride but these handlebars were short!

I love everything about the Mountain Cat!

Is that one of the spendier dynamo hubs? Do you find you get some boost in it with the smaller 26" MTB wheel as compared to the more typical 700C?

Here's my '84 Specialized Stumpjumper Sport XT. I've owned it since new. Still looking good; although it hasn't been ridden much over the past 40 years. When I have a chance to take some more detailed pics, I plan to post it in the Classic & Vintage What's it Worth? subforum as one of my goals is to find a good home for it sometime in 2024. Enjoy!

Kasi hub & SuperNova light set up.
it’s my first dyno so I’ve got nothing to compare it to.

I’m fully in the dyno camp now. It’s just too handy to not worry about changing lights anymore.

I picked up some chromed bullmoose goodness this evening. Deerhead XT, Kashimax leather saddle, high flange
Shimano hubs Araya single wall rims with the directional dimples, Suntour XC bear traps, Shimano cantilevers, those
funky old foam/rubber grips with the collars on each end and red end plugs. Nicely done
lugs all over and an OS downtube... Probably 83 at the newest from the looks of it. Frame label
states Made in Japan... Miyata build probably?? Not Biopace, has a Sugino AT crank.

It. is. BONE dry!!!!!! There's not a speck of oil or grease on the thing, ANYWHERE. This is one of those tear it down and polish and/or brass brush every little bit and bolt.

The saving grace? Hardly any rust on the chrome bits!

What the hell is it you ask??......... Nashbar Terra XT!

It will get a total thrice over, polished and greased all over, chips eliminated where possible, aluminum parts polished, etc. Should look amazing in a few weeks

Maruishi made the 80’s Nashbar road frames. I don’t know about the ATB frames.

My buddy's dad bought a Nashbar Terra Back in the mid 80's, very similar to this one. It was outfitted with Suntour XC Components and roller cam brakes. Silver with a sweet bullmoose handlebar. We rode the wheels off that thing and it never gave an ounce of trouble. I'd love to have it now but alas.... Yours is the only other one I've seen since then! Nice find!

It has to be a decent manufacturer no matter who it was. The lug points are filed down. Not as much as say an Italian road bike, but still. It also has three water bottle mounts. Hardly anyone did that on mountain bikes. I only wish it had portage strap mounts.,,,,BD

On a side note if anyone has a decent Deerhead RD with a strong cage spring, I would trade a Campy Nuovo Record RD for it.... Never been much of a record guy anyway, and will likely never use it. No cracked pulleys
and a small scar here and there, but not junk.

Nashbar bike above looks similar to many Arayas that have passed through my stand, I think. But this is just from memory, don't take it too seriously. Seat cluster and fork crown and the extra dent in the chain stay are my main clues here, as well as the general finishing.

Offhand I'm not sure if Araya had it's own factory or them and Nashbar had their bikes just made by another.

Making some slow progress on my light restoration of a '91 Rockhopper Comp. I installed 2.1" Schwalbe Billy Bonkers tires (thanks to mjj1015 for the tip) and a Ritchey saddle I picked up for cheap. Also hit the paint with some cleaner wax and touched up the few scratches as best as I could - not surprisingly this oddball green color is very hard to find an exact match. I found a paint that is very close, but a little too light, so I may try mixing in a little metallic gray and see if I can match it more closely for one more thin coat. In any case overall the bike is fairly pristine, so I'm not going to sweat a few cosmetic imperfections, life's too short, blah blah blah...





Next is to modernize the cockpit with a stem quill adapter, but am still unsure about how to go about handling the front brake cable hanger. I've done things kind of bass-ackwards by handling cosmetics before mechanicals, so still need to free up the sticky trigger shifters (plenty of youtube solutions available it seems), grease all bearings and lube or replace cables where necessary.

Sweet rockhopper! Love the colorways of these 90's Specialized bikes.
You could always use a fork mounted cable stop. That's what I did on my Rockhopper.

Thanks, Silver Steve, I saw some of what must've been fork mounted cable hangers on the eBay, but wasn't quite sure what they were. I will keep that in mind, though there are a couple of other solutions I might try first. Likewise, nice Rockhopper!

Both Rockhoppers above are smokin and those gum wall tires always make the build pop out. I'll repeat myself from an earlier post as I didn't much of a response, but did you have any problems with seating the Billy Bonkers? mine would not play nice going on the rims despite using all the tricks in the trade to get them to fit.

What do you use to finish it to give it that glow? both look so fresh and shiny.
