Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How old is 600? Is it in any way a precursor to Ultegra?

they changed the name from 600 to Ultegra sometime, IIRC, in the 90's.

Yes, it was replaced with Ultegra 6500 9 speed in '97/'98. My '97 Raleigh has the original 600 tri color group. Functions perfectly.

600 goes back a long ways. I ran 600EX friction in the mid80s and it was not a new name then. Other posters have the change to Ultegra right.

yes it's precursor to Ultegra. I have 600 with DT shifters on my 1989 Centurion. As smooth if not smoother than my sram apex

Just a side note, as 600 has been correctly identified as a pre-Ultegra group.

But there have also been several products released under R600 name, too. These are gap filling products like long reach brakes or compact cranksets (before all their groups had one). They also sell similar stuff under the R500 & R700 lines that are respectively down or upmarket, but they are less common.

Shimano 600 appeared around 1983. I had one of the earliest groups that had been given to the custom builder I bought from as a demo/sample to promote the new product. The bridging model between 600 and Ultegra was the 6400, also called the Rainbow group because of the graphics on some of the parts. Some of the parts were labeled 600, others were labeled Ultegra in that group.

if we are to believe this, it came out sometime in the early 70's, and had several appellations, that i am aware of, over the next two decades or so (not exhaustive): Arabesque, EX, and Tri-Color.

This is correct. I purchased a set of R600 NOS shifters off of eBay two years ago as an upgrade to my Sora shifters on my cross bike. Even though the R600's were older it was still a good upgrade. They are considered an Ultegra level mid release. The guy who put them on for me mentioned that if I were to get an Ultegra derailluer that the shifting would be even better. I still have the Sora on there; will get to upgrade at some point.
