Thanks for the help. BestBuy has a nice looking Toshiba for $479. Just might be what I'm looking for.

same. First time in a while. Went pretty hard on the hammerfred yesterday. The kind of ride where there was 20 of us, then 10, then 4, then me and 2 guys on TT rigs.
The kind of ride that stung my legs to get back onto the back of the train. Feels good.

Our Sun rides are only 40 mi but after a short warmup its all-out. Sometimes if my legs arent smoked a few of us will do an hour or two after that ride.

I wish I had those options.

Most of the riders around here have completely shut down over the past month or two. Any group ride is going to be a whole lot of slow plus a bunch of limp hill attacks. And not long enough for slow to be helpful.

It annoys me, since I just want to do an hour at tempo or ride easy but throw in some good solid threshold intervals.

Hence, I have to do it myself.

example: saturday, five of us. a few riders are pushing it on every rise. I look down, see I am way out of zone, drop back.

They crest the hill and shut down. Totally. coasting.

I go past them because I am trying to keep pedaling (and at this point am only in zone 2).

I go way past.

Next hill: same thing happens. etc.

eventually I have to wait up (the funny thing is I am not the strongest rider here but just trying to stay in zone)

I don't see much training value in pushing every rise and then coasting so much that your legs get cold.

Fortunately the one thing we do have here is a fun group almost every weekend. We started it out of our sponsor shop just about 9 mo ago...and its gotten big. We (small team) were asked by the shop owner if we would commit to showing up every Sun and heading out with everyone, and keeping it together for at least 10 miles or so, which is a nice little warmup. Most days plenty of "fast" or at least "motivated" guys show up, and we'll split off the front (the A ride). At times we'll have 10-15 most of the way. Its fun.

Anyone have a download cable for an SRM PC VI they can lend me for a few days? Not sure if it's the cable or the PC that's got a balky pin.

I ride with groups. I train alone. I find it almost impossible to do any pre-prescribed workout when riding with others, unless it's base or tempo rides.

I don't have enough motivation if I have to ride solo for weeks on end. I typically get my schedule aligned reasonably well with at least a few other teammates and we try to do the same interval sessions together.

that would be just fine.

honestly I don't say much more than a few words about it, not wanting to be a dick or push the issue.

after all, fred or not, these are my friends (and perhaps I am a fred too)

so far the best results have come from wisecracks like "I dare ya to stay in zone".

the key issue is the whole "keep pedaling on the downhill" though. If I'm just pushing L2 and going way ahead, there will be an inevitable time where I have to stop or turn around.

Grumpy, it's going to be tough to do group rides and stay in zone unless you're training with your team or a team with similar goals at the same time of the year. Either stay in zone and surf the group or take over the front and set the pace, letting the legstretchers go up the road.

Yeah I can see that, but having a coach that gives me prescribed workouts every day makes it harder to ride with others. The neighborhood I live in is full of cyclists, it has a road club with a few guys who race and there are 4-5 guys who I really like to ride with. Unfortunately this time of year I can't really ride with them as they are out for ride and I'm training.
