Help - Changing a tire on a rod brake roadster
Well, the inevitable happened Saturday. The front tire blew on my DL-1 (luckily not too far from home). I was fortunate enough to find a replacement tube at my LBS. Now the problem is, how do I get the front wheel off? Is there a way to release the brake without disassembling it? There doesn't appear to be an obvious solution. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Got it off by removing only one brake pad (in case anyone else runs into it); only to find the tire wall had blown out as well. Relatively new Dunlop too. Hate when that happens.

If it was a Dunlop tyre then it could have been 30+ years old. Dunlop made bicycle tyres at Speke near Liverpool but the factory closed in the late 70's

Any tips out there regarding changing the rear tire on a rod brake roadster that has an enclosed chainguard? It's the thought of getting the chain inside the chaincase, back onto the rear sprocket, that makes me not want to deal with it at all.

I was afraid of this on mine, but it turned out not to be much of a problem at all. The very back 3" or so of the chaincase unscrews from the rest. Then you have basically an exposed rear wheel and sprocket to work with.
If you really mess up and knock the chain off the chainwheel, you can get access to the front by removing the round plate in front of the chainwheel with a screwdriver.

For the rear tire, if it's only a puncture, it's often easier to patch the tube without taking the wheel off.
