Campagnola Athena chain ring

Hi there, I need to find a replacement outer chain ring for my Campy Athena compact. It's 50 tooth, 110 BCD 5 bolt but it must be pre 2011 as Campy changed the rings in 2011 and the new ones won't fit. I've spent a long time searching the net but can't find one anywhere. Any ideas?

Is your crank an Ultra torque or Power torque? They only made the Athena Ultra torque for 1 year

Campy compact was rare in the old 5 bolt pattern. I have a Chorus Compact from that era and it was hard to find. I think most other 5 bolt chainrings will work, but I know you want Campy. That was the start when everybody was switching to compact with wide range cassettes made possible with the ever increasing number of cogs and the increasing quality of index systems.

Hi Zacster, if I can't get a Campy chain ring, what other 5 bolt 50t 110bcd would you suggest I try?

Both Stronglight and Specialites TA make 5 bolt 110mm BCD chainrings to fit Campagnolo compact cranks. I provided a link to one in your other identical thread

You could try FSA and I happen to have a spare brand new one. I can't even remember why I have it, but it has this pin to prevent the chain from falling between it and the crank arm. In looking at my Chorus crank though the difference is that one bolt goes directly in the crankarm, with the pin just outside of it. This FSA has the pin between two bolt holes so it wouldn't fit there. I wonder if the real Campy has a special bolt hole for the crank arm. I never took it apart.

You are welcome to it for a nominal trade, look at the pic and decide if you want it. Model number is 371-0250F if you want to look it up.

That chainring will not fit a Campagnolo crank. The bolt pattern on Campagnolo cranks is different

I think it would go on, I just checked against my Chorus, but I don't think the crank arm bolt is quite right, plus that pin. I think I tried to mount it on a Shimano crank once and the bolts all lined up, but the pin didn't. I bought a real Shimano instead. The crank that the Chorus had replaced was an FSA, and I always had a problem with the crank arm bolt. It was a common problem on that model and they modified it on newer versions. In any case, this is a standard 110 BCD bolt pattern. This was once common to all compact cranks as you probably remember. 130 for standard, 110 for compact. Now nothing is standard and you can't mix and match anymore. "Progress" I guess.

Campagnolo in their wisdom put the hidden bolt hole at 113mm instead of 110mm
All 5-arm Campy chain rings have this "feature" except the first Veloce and Centaur square taper compacts.

Regular 110bcd rings will not fit, they need to be Campa specific.

When I looked yet again I could see you are right. There was something about that last bolt.

Hi Zacster, thanks for the suggestion of trying FSA. one of the other guys put me on to TA Nerius so I've just placed an order for it now. it's not shiny aluminium but graphite. if it works I don't care.

I'll have to remember this if I ever need a new chainring. It isn't likely at this point because of my 65 years. I still ride lots but I'm guessing it'll slow down at some point and I'll switch to a different bike in any case to be a little more comfortable.

Hope it works out for you!
