Can’t vouch for the ALANs, but ovalized top tubes (and down tubes) were a feature of Cannondale bikes, starting with the 2.8, 3.0, and continuing through the early CAAD-series.
The main difference is that Dale’s are ovalized horizontally at the seat tube end, and vertically at the head tube; they’re only round in the middle.

Looks Factory to me......The change in tube appears symmetrical and with the 3 guides, it seems highly unlikely that an over tightened repair stand was used incorrectly because the middle eyelet is not deformed.

Not sure what the reasoning behind this feature is!

I noticed that my new-to-me 1986 ALAN Record has a slightly flattened oval top tube.
At the front and rear of the bike, where it fits into the seat post lug and head tube lug the top tube is round, and about 1 inch in diameter.
In the middle of the tube the top tube is slightly flattened, and measures about an inch and an eighth wide ( looking down from the top ) and about seven eighths of an inch ( when seen from the side ) at the middle cable guide.
The way the reflected light hits the frame makes the difference obvious. (See picture).
I'm wondering if this is of structural benefit and if it is why isn'y it a more common design feature ?

Death fork? Naaaah!!
FWIW, my Alan is much more stable on fast descents than my round top tubed Vitus 979. Don't know if that's the reason, but it MIGHT make the main triangle less flexy laterally.

(looking for a picture and not seeing it? Thank the Photobucket fiasco.PM me and I'll link it up.)
