Has anyone tried going the opposite direction - minimal glasses? Currently I wear contacts with sunglasses.
But Fignon's wire rimmed (did they have cable temples?) were obviously faster.

I like brown lens sunglasses....
In high school and college I wore Wayfarers with brown lenses.
In the Army I had M frames with clear, yellow, and brown lenses.
Brown lenses sorta disappeared for a while then Nike introduced some brown lenses so I bought those
I'm old now so I ride with my prescription polarized brown lenses and if a company introduces an an easily swappable frame that has a variety of lens colors that can be made in my prescription I'll probably get them pending wife approval.

Yeah, all my sunglasses are safety glasses with cheaters, or I do have prescription Oakleys with progressive lenses for skiing and riding.
I recently got some Bliz glasses - a bit "oversized" by the OP's standards. They're great for XC because they are good at not fogging and give full coverage top and bottom for snowflakes and wind. I got some of those stick on cheaters for them.

If I ever get cataract surgery and can get by without a prescription maybe I'll splurge and have several pairs of sunglasses with different shapes and colors of lenses for different uses and conditions.

If you search on something like stick on reading glasses, or cheaters, you'll find them. I've bought generic versions on EBay and "name brand" versions there and elsewhere (I'm sure Amazon has many examples too, but I don't use Amazon). I've never looked locally but I'll bet some big box stores have them as well. One example:

Those are great off the bike, but they don't provide much eye protection. I occasionally forget to grab my cycling glasses (wrap around Rudy Rydons), and ride in my every day glasses (small wire rims). It doesn't take very long before I miss the protection against dust, bugs, rocks, etc.

I got a pair from Aliexpress because they claimed to be photochromic for $4 delivered to my door.
They are super clear in the dark, and surprisingly dark in the light. They change very quickly, too. Fantastic as I *HATE* carrying another pair of glasses or lenses for rides that include different lighting conditions.
They are vented, haven't fogged even in the hot rain we got recently, survived my short-notice stop into a car that turned in front of me, and are the best value for money I've ever had in sunglasses.
Fashion was the least of my criteria. lol

POC seems to promote the idea of the glasses and helmet matching up to eliminate the gap between the two.
While this might be more aero, I've found that a lack of airflow between helmet and glasses results in an endless stream of sweat in my eyes.

Be careful when buying oversized glasses so the helmet is not bouncing off them on bumps which can get annoying - at least to me.

As someone who remembers the fashions of the 70’s (watch the original “Gone in 60 Seconds”), I find modern cycling wear and glasses to be very conservative.
