Anyway to change the color of the braking surface?

Is there a way to turn the alloy braking surface from silver to black? I like the look of having a clean black finish instead of having silver at the edge of the rim. Anyone know a way how?

the brake track is a wearing surface. The ONLY way to make it stay black is to use a material that's black through and through, like some sort of black plastic for the rim.

Unfortunately nobody makes rims like that, so no matter what you do, you'll always be bringing up fresh gray material as the brake track wears.

One option that may meet your needs is to consider disc brakes, so the rim won't suffer any wear. Of course then you'll have to accept silver colored brake discs.

I ride brakeless, I was offered a way that used spray paint and covering up the parts with masking tape so only the surface is painted black. Is that a good way?

If you ride brakeless, there isn't a "braking surface" to worry about. So whatever works cosmetically, ie. paint will do the job.

Get a bike with disc brakes and you can paint your rims any color you like.

you can pony up the cost of a powder coated Rim or a wheel build with an Anodized , and dyed black rim

You want it on the Cheap , I realize that ..

a Drum brake Front hub wheel build can be used in a frame made to be used on a closed Oval Track.

The most permanent way would be to get rims the color you want that don't have a braking surface on them.

There is no way to change the color of the braking surface.

Anything that changes the color will render the braking surface useless as such. Braking will no longer be part of the surface's function.

Find some old-school dark anodized rims without machined braking surfaces, e.g.:

So I was able to find a way that required using spray paint. Again I ride brakeless meaning i don't use brakes at all. I ride a Cinelli Parallax on the street. Thank you for all the feedback.

Good luck with that. Panic stop how? Or just crash into stuff? Many street fixies have a front rim brake. But black wheels rock !

You could try blackening the rims with Blackening agent such as Birchwood Casey's Aluminum Black product. There are other more toxic yet effective options to but you'll need to Google search for "blacken aluminum". Gunsmiths and machinists do this work. For this type of a project though you may not get the results you're looking for...meaning uniform coloring and a deep enough black color, but it's worth a shot. Look at some of the before and after photos of Birchwood Casey product blackening. Some are pretty good.

+1. Why buy rims with a machined braking surface if you don't like the look and aren't going to use brakes?

I thought cops in big cities are cracking down on people without brakes? and Fixies don't count they want to actual brakes.
in my city is $90CDN for no brakes (actual brakes not fixie)
and no bell another $90CDN, it adds up and fines are probably worse in big US cities too.

Anything other than a full disassembly and pro paint, anodize, or powder coat will not be durable and will look scruffy.

Spend more time time riding it than looking at it.
