Tire rim compatibility
Howdy folks,
new guy here hoping to learn about bike maintenance.
I have a set of 29x 2.1 tires and I’m wondering if they will fit on my 17mm wide rim (inner width.
The tires are Kenda Small Block Eight.
is the 17mm rim wide enough for the 2.1” tire?

So that would be about 52mm. The chart says “compatible”, rather than “optimal”. That’s gonna be about right. If the tire has a flexible sidewall, it will be marginally compatible. If it has a stiff sidewall, it will be less compatible. A rim of at least 19mm inner width would be better.
I should probably add, I’ve run 26er RTP tires that were about 52mm wide on 17mm and 18mm rims without an issue of the rim being too narrow. Those tires do have flexible sidewalls. I’ve since relegated the 17mm rim to holding a 26x1.6 home training tire.

If you already have them, there is no reason why you can't try them and see for yourself. Might be for the way you ride and other factors that they'll do fine. Don't ride like a bat out of hell your first time out.
If you feel the tire wanting to roll sideways on you when you are in a turn, then you might try upping the pressure a little higher.
If it's too scary to ride at any pressure, then you know you need to get a wider rim or narrower tire.

It's a bit much tire for the rim, but doable. I'd rather mount bagels with cream cheese on the rim, that way there's something to eat when waiting for the shame ride.

Riding 2.1’s on 14mm inner width. Decades ago people were riding crappy mtb tires on re-rolled road rims.
