Barn find Masi resto

as a follow up to:

I was the lucky bastard who scored the bike. it was shortly after midnight and I was getting ready to pack it in for the day. as I glanced @ my email account the list of stuff for sale @ C&V had just been received. the Masi looked interesting for a number of reasons so I sent a message and went to bed. fast forward to yesterday... this is just a quick post to keep the ball rolling.
wheels will probably be Martanos on Campy LF NR hubs w/ an Everest FW. missing from the pix is the chain (yuck!) Mr. Regina will be taking over that duty. everything pictured has been replaced and is already on the bike or waiting to be installed. the chain rings in the queue are 46 & 52 ... until I can locate a 50. I'm staying as historically correct as possible and keeping as many of the original parts as I can. more later...

I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with it. I seriously contemplated this bike but could not justify another acquisition at this time. My take was to get it road worthy , ride it for a year , and have the paint and decals done at Franklin Frames. The same thing I did when I bought my ‘75 Colnago here on Bike Forums.

a short note on progress.
rear derailleur:
new spring, lower pivot bolt & grub screw. upper pivot cleaned up. I'm on the fence about replacing it. took me a minute to round up the ferrule which was absent.
one of the drop out adjusters was pretty beat up. replaced w/ a good one while retaining the OG spring and "operating cap" ... or whatever it's called.
all cables will be replaced... not because I'm OCD (although I *am* OCD) but because I couldn't get solder to stick to the ends.
I've been going after the rust spots w/ a sharp pick. not sure what prep I should do prior to applying paint.

Touch up or repaint?

The pick method is very tedious IMO.

touch up please. IMO this one is *way* too nice to repaint, thank you very much yes, tedious it is. I'm getting as much of the rust off as possible but can't get *all* of the scale out "mechanically".

Big fan of polish. Less durable I guess but easier to get smooth. More color combos.

Hard for me to tell if this is red or the infamous Masi “tomato soup” orange. If it’s the latter, you may want to take a look at VW Sundown Orange for a paint match. You can get samples from some of the automotive touch up sites.
Might be a good starting point.

as a note, I thought I had pix but will need to take them again, the handlebars are stuffed with wine bottle corks. is there some significance ?
oh... with the help of the PO I did manage to round up a 4.0MM BB adjusting cup lock ring. more later...

replacing the saddle was not a tough decision to make. some say Cinelli didn't start the rear script until '73. am I going to lose any sleep over this ? of course not but, I may be on the prowl for a saddle sans script. the early U.S. catalog (Carlsbad) does not specify a saddle type or maker.

interesting to note that toe clips are specified as Christophe. I recall reading a review in one of the cycling magazines, that predates the above, and Cornez was specified. I have a set and will use them.
the wheels on the bike as purchased are mix-n-match. I'll build a low flange Campy NR set with either Nisi or Martano rims.

that's a really nice old bike, quite a find. I have an M62 that I've owned since 1978 and it still brings a smile, almost all original.

This red bike with twin plate crown is really special. Surprisingly the paint looks pretty good compared to the corrosion on the components.

But I gotta tell you - makes me cringe when I see you lay it down on the concrete ! maybe at least a big piece of carpet ? if not a repair stand.

thanks Mark. I've been having fun getting her back into shape. currently waiting on the wheel set, out for building.
agreed about a stand. the concrete you mention is actually a well worn melamine folding table.

I would go Martano. Nisi is for Colnago.
Christophe is what I saw used.
yellow Bindas for straps, end folded and riveted.
saddle would be a Cinelli. This is before the decoration on the back.


I like that for easy pulling the straps tight.
incorrect clips, yep, I might know but this is a rider, black pedals were an upcharge option.
twisting of Binda straps was not necessary and not original.
