Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Singlespeed Cyclocross. Two questions.

1. What gearing do most people use?

2. Are moustache bars OK?

i ran 36/16 or 36/18 depending on the course, but mostly 36/18 in NY and NE. that was only because i wasn't interested in experimenting with other gears because i didn't want to deal with a tensioner.

A buddy of mine won a cross race with moustache bars and 2/1 (I believe it was 36/18, don't quote me on that). I'd say it was pretty rad.

Moustache bars might be too wide, though I don't know the limits and I doubt that most race organizers check or care.

Gearing varies by course. I ran 38/16 most of the season, though.

Are you actually racing in a local series? If not don't sweat it, run what you want. If you are racing I doubt the guys here in Sac are worried about the bars but I can find out for you.

i never had any problems with the gary bars in college or uscf races. no one really seems to care, and it makes you a big ****ing hit with the crowd, no matter how well you do.

I ran 44-22; 2/1 ratio is pretty good if you're not worried about winning but just going out there to have a good time. I rode with straight bars but moustache would have been nice considering the leverage you get.

I think mustache bars are okay in mass start events, but bullhorns are illegal at least for OBRA.

Which sucks cause I was hoping to throw on some cyclo tires on my conversion and race it in some mud for fun.

it seems like cyclocross is one place where they wouldnt really care: theyre pretty chill. If it was a road race they would get butt-hurt about it, but thats just how they roll. rock 'em

The bike pictured is now a fixed gear. What is interesting is that it has a high bottom bracket and lots of clearance for fat tires. I got to thinking that it would be good if I wanted to try cyclocross. Now, I have a Surly Crosscheck. And you might ask "why not use that bike." Well, the crosscheck spends most of it's commuter life adorned with racks, fenders, a mirror, lights, and various other commuter baubles. And it has barcons.

Easier to just slap a freewheel on the Miyata.

^^^ That would make an awesome ss/cx bike. I wouldn't race fg till you have a few seasons under your belt. Most cx racers will forgive honest mistakes in a race. A new racer on a fg isn't one of them. Also, in ss you'll all be lumped in one cat. You'll be racing against guys/gals who have years of cross experience. If you're slowing them down because you're over your head on a fg... you'll get an earful when the race is over.

I am going to be running these on my new ss/cx bike.

Not much into the racing, but keep thinking I should try it...

What levers would you guys recommend with something like these?
I can't decide between flat bar levers or road levers.

Oh yeah, to the OP, I will being running 42X18. Used to run 39x18 on my off road fixed Cross Check.

That is a knock-off of the On-one Mary bar. You can't put road levers on it without a shim, and MTB levers will work better anyways. Be warned, they are wide as ****.

42x18. I think I should gear down a tad. I use wide drops, no experience with stash bars offroad.

Mountain levers it is then. I like them better anyways.

I thought that fixed gear was prohibited and you had to have a freewheel in cyclocross?

Nope. Lots of us do it. Just make sure your skills are up to snuff. CX is hard enough to do right.
