Shimano 5600 105 - left brifter issue
I'm working on a ~10 year old Jamis Ventura Race fitted with 5600 series 105, 2x10 that wasn't shifting properly. I adjust the limit screws on the FD so it would shift up, but now it won't shift back to the inner ring.
Disconnected from the FD the left shifter works fine. If I just apply tension with my fingers, the shifting works, but as soon as I connect the FD and shift up to the big ring and apply full tension to the cable the brifter won't downshift. If I release even the tiniest amount of tension at the FD the shifter releases and it drops back down. I'm guessing at this point the shifter is bin ready, but the owner wants to finish out the season so any special tricks that might get it working for a few more months?

It sounds like you have the FDER cage jammed against the H limit screw.
Back off the cable tension or H screw just a bit.

i backed the h screw way out so the cage can move out past the big ring. As soon as the cable is under the full tension from the FD spring it won’t down shift. It’s a bottom pull and just pressing down on the top of the FD a tiny amount release the tension enough for the downshift to work.

'Shifter'.
I agree with what Bill posted, hard to say for sure w/o seeing it in person.

When I have FD issues that aren't blatantly obvious, I tend to just start from scratch: disconnect the cable from the FD and go through the entire FD installation and adjustment procedure step by step, starting at step one, not skipping anything. Alignment, clearance, limit screws, cable tension, etc. Use either the Shimano instructions or a quality video guide like Park Tool. You can chase limit screws, cable tension, etc. etc. and sometimes with experience you can figure out what's going on. But for us amateurs, sometimes just going through each of the steps one by one exactly will get it set up properly.
Also, as suggested above, along with those steps, make sure the shifter pulls and releases the cable smoothly and easily through the housing and through the bottom bracket guides and that the FD spring and movement work properly. You can do that by moving the FD when the cable is disconnected and check the cable by grabbing the loose FD end of the cable and pulling on it while you shift up and down with the shifter. This could very well be the issue since friction might not be allowing the spring of the FD to move the chain to the smaller ring. But it could be something else, so my suggestion to start at step one.

Here's a video of what's happening, you'll see that the FD moves with no issues and that the shifter works fine with 'finger tension' but as soon is it gets under full load from the FD spring it just can't release the ratchet to shift back down. As soon as a I release a little bit of tension it shifts fine:

Flush & lube is the first standard thing to do with any STI shifter having issues.

It seems like something has worn in the shifter such that once it's under full tension from the FD spring the release mechanism slips/can't engage properly. The owner was already thinking about a new bike for next year so this might just finalise her decision.

Have you turned the bike over and looked at the bottom bracket cable guide closely?
