1977 Peugeot PX10LE ????

I picked up this bike recently..repainted blue (very thick paint)...no decals or headbadge. I now have it stripped to bare metal (original color was red). Peugeot style serial number plate #7035667. It had Peugeot stem, Phillipe handlebars, and Stronglight 99 crankset. All other components were upgraded Campagnolo Nuovo Record. Wheelset was newer Araya with Campy hubs. Chrome plating on fork and frame legs...except rear dropouts. The dropouts are Shimano SF which I believe were changed later. The water bottle bosses were probably added later too. Are my assumptions correct? Any thoughts all you Peugeot experts?

An LE in that frame size will be distinguished by extremely steep frame angles, around 76 degrees parallel.

The bend in the fork legs will also be particularly straight except at the bottom. This adds trail to such a steep-angled frameset.

All details appear to be an LE.

So someone decided to de-Simplex or de-Huret the bike the hard way? (I don't know with which the bike was originally spec'ed). Are the front dropouts Shimano as well?

The fork looks original...1977 frames were spec'ed with Simplex....looks like the bike was built up for long distance touring....there was a Nashbar rear rack .....

It may have come to you with a rack but this was a racing bike. There are posters on BF who have toured on PX 10s. The older or earlier PX 10s make decent "touring" bikes as they had decent tire clearance and the gearing is easy enough to modify. This generation of PX10s, however, have steep angles so perhaps not a great choice for touring. That said, people have toured happily on all sorts of bikes. I have a 1982 PXN 10 which I love but I don't think I'd tour on it since the tire size maxes out at 28c.

I am going to paint it red and apply 1977 correct decals. I am going to use the Campy components it came to me with. I also have a 1971 PX10 that I picked up several years ago. I have already repainted it back to it's white color. It did have it's original Mafac and Simplex components. So hopefully later this year I will have two PX10's to show (and they are both my size...23").
