Here is a 1971 Schwinn Racer I just overhauled and cleaned up.
Thw paint took a lot of touching up and it's no show stopper but with a new clear coat and some shiny bliing , not too bad.

Old guy & bikes
Check replacement springs, compare sping tension to originals. I once bought aftermarket springs that had much stronger tension. So much so that it didn’t shift well. I got them for the same reason: old ones were ok but I had it open, why not? I disliked the new operation enough that I put the old ones back in.

Looks like it cleaned up nicely. That style of frame is sometimes used by guys who build up 26 inch wheel "muscle bikes" because the originals on the small wheels are too small for an adult. That frame size is good for a smaller adult as well. Color looks good on that bike.

Lots of daylight today to go for a ride after work. We've had some trouble getting truly good weather for rides here lately. It has been kind of cool, damp, and sometimes smoky (the wildfires in Quebec were sending smoke down this way for a week or so). But tonight was great - 1941 Schwinn New World 3 speed.

A cousin spotted this at a tag sale and texted to ask if I was interested. For $10 I couldn't say no! I believe I see a twist shifter, no chainguard and some very creatiuve fulcrum placement. Beyond that, I am scratching my head over the date (68 latest?) and lower-end fender stays, rims and saddle, not to mention that it's unusual to see this color (colour? colorway??) so anyone with deeper knowledge than mine, please chime in. I'll have it in a bit more than a week, until then this is all I have to go on.

I could see that. Twist grips looked cool so someone could have made that choice, not realizing that they just didn't work well for long.

Well the hub is an English 3 speed anyway...
A 1956 Schwinn Racer I picked up last year. I was searching for a '62 but this had cooler graphics and head badge so it came home with me. I didn't do a restoration obvivouly, just cleaned it up and gave it some TLC. Judging by the date code on the rear hub it was late '56 so maybe sold in '57. Or a Christmas bike? Who knows.
The first picture is "pre-TLC"
The "temporary" seat is too high in those photos but even so the frame is too small for me. I found a '62 frame in the next size up so I'll probably be putting another one together at some point.

I very much appreciate SirMike’s ride photos, and the attention to detail on his bikes. It is to Smokey here for me to do a ride today.
On another note, this hobby takes you to strange places. eBay showed me a 1934 KB hub. I thought, oh, it has the indicator, so I bid.
I now have a hub, with no bike to fit it to, and no real prospects of finding one, or having room for if I did find one.
The plus side is it appears to work, brakes, and three gears, and I have a spare indicator for my 37 Raleigh Utility roadster.

Just let my '69 Sports go to someone who needed basic transportation. I think I'm going to continue this practice. Buy up inexpensive 3 speeds for sale locally, ride 'em awhile and give them to someone who needs reliable transportation. Would love to see more of these great bikes out on the road being used.
