I'm 25 and definitely one of the younger bike commuters I see. Seems like the average around 40 if I had to guess. Of course the average age of people in my office is around 40.

Not that this is commuting related, but my dad is 67 and does cross country (West to East) rides every year for the past 8-10 years. He rides > 4500 miles a year. So I think you have a while to go before your body give out

I personally am 33 and average 80-100 miles a week commuting.

It's a bit regional, I think.

In NJ, the only other bike commuters I see regularly are somewhat older than me (and I'm 47). I occasionally see younger guys, but they are seasonal; I see the old guys year-round.

In NYC I see a more younger guys, and women too, and more who commute in all seasons.

early 30s. 15km one way through a mix of parks MUP and street bike lanes. I wish it's all paved park MUPs. I always envision pleasant ride through the forest with birds chirping and deers bouncing along me.

Newish ( < 1 year) commuter here: 25 years of age, and a 52 mile round trip.

I love seeing 'older' cyclists, both on BF and on the road, more than capable of handing my ass to me. It's nice to know that my best cycling days are likely still ahead of me.

Yep. The dense cities have more youngun's because cars can be so expensive and inconvenient, and there are alternatives to cars and bikes when you need them. The burbs have a different breed. Thank god for the old guys, some of them I can catch.

I will be 68 next month and do 34 mile R/T a couple of times a week provided its not raining. My average speed has fallen steadily over the last 30 years, but the enjoyment has increased.

Sounds familar I ran cross country and track in high school, then started smoking in college and quit running. Spent the next 18 years smoking and mostly not exercising except for a few periods when I cycled for a few months. Quit smoking 7 years ago and started running and working out with weights. Started bike commuting 3 years ago. I quit smoking when my oldest son turned 2 years old, I decided I wanted to live long enough to see him grow up.

I'm 43, have 3 little kids at home, my commute is 20 miles round trip and I do it 2 days per week. Two to three times a month I get in a weekend ride too.

I'm 40 and ride 28 miles RT 5 days/week, year round. We just bought a new house a little further away, so starting in 3 weeks, it'll be 41 miles RT. I've been a bike commuter most of my life, but there were periods where I stopped due to work or school commitments. I started commuting full time again about a year ago when I started a new job and I really enjoy it.

50 and commute 2 -3 times a week, about 10 miles round trip until the roads get too slick. I do some utility riding and some strictly for exercise and fun too- enough so that my friends aren't surprised when I ride up on my bicycle anymore.

54 and multi-mode commute (bike & bus). My riding distance ranges between 7 and 46 miles RT depending on daily schedule. I get lots of other exercise (running, mountain biking, upper body workouts, wrestling my 14 year old cousin and losing) but I like to ride as much as I can.

I'm 27, and commute via bike several days a week. (Mon & Tues of this week so far). Most of the fellow commuters I see here are older than me. My morning ride is 8.5 miles, but I take a shaded MUP path home to the tune of 11 miles.

I don't ride every day, as I have crappy knees and like to give them recovery time.

Has anyone else noticed that they don't ride for pleasure once they start commuting?

I still ride on weekends for fun. In the winter, this is essential because it's the only time I get to ride during daylight. Also, it helps break the routine of always going to the same place. On my fun rides, I'm free to explore and take as much time as I want.

35, 2 1/2 mile commute, but I usually extend it to 15-25 miles on the way home by combining a few bike paths together with a bit of city biking in between. I get that freedom feeling almost every night. It probably helps that the miles I have to travel can be done in about 10 minutes or so.

45 with a current commute of 9 mile RT. This is going to double with much more city riding after the first of the year. My dilemma is I also have a 30-40 minute train ride in the middle. Right now door to door is 50 to 60 minutes. The new commute may make that jump to 1.5 hours. I'm questioning whether I'm going to be able to sustain 5 days a week.

Just turned 57 today my commute is only 12 miles round trip unless I ride my motorcycle then for some reason it jumps up to 50 or 60 and am usually late for dinner on those days.

The only two at my office that ride bikes are me at 40 and another guy who's in his mid-50's. However, that's a completely random thing. It really has nothing to do with age - it's about how people prefer to spend their time. The other people at my work either live in the 'burbs or are too busy in the evening or are averse to getting sweaty to bike. My primary reason for biking to work is to keep my car in the garage to increase its longevity, and biking is fine with me because I don't do anything in the evenings except go home to eat and sleep . We have zero walkers in my office, due to the poor weather here and the bad town layout.
