One of these bikes is not like the others -- and I don't mean the aluminum C'dale.

Thank you for posting this article! One of my all-time favorite bike books is Frank Berto's "The Dancing Chain", because it is so very engineer-y. Seeing his bike here confirms every preconception I had about him.

Nice bikes!
Berto's Redcay and Langley's Oxford definitely appeal to me. The Erickson would be next in line.

I had forgotten that this existed. Thank you for reminding me.

I love Scott Martin's I-built-this-bike-out-of-take-off-parts-and-beer Cannondale! That, ladies and gentlemen, is what a proper shop-rat frankenbike looked like. "I bought it because I used to work for the company and employees get a nice discount... I got a black one since... that's the color they had the most of. <snip> Another reason I chose most of this equipment is that I got it for free."

Represent, my cheap-ass brutha... Represent!

PS: If you have the "Hey, what if we picked out four custom frames and four lucky readers to ride them? And what if we let everybody take one home with them?" article from '87 or so, that'd be awesome. With a side of awesome, and Awesome Sauce. Thanks, homie.

PPS: If memory serves, as it is increasingly unwilling to do, three of the four bikes were a curly-stay Hetchins, a 3Rensho Katana, and a Spectrum. The 4th bike eludes me.

I miss the days when I would go on group rides and all the bikes were steel with downtube shifters like that. Average pace honestly seemed to be faster than compared to today. Maybe because everyone started on a 53/42 and 12-18 or something haha

Sure. And assuming you or others who missed out last time would like a copy, you can download it here: https://1drv.ms/b/s!AgHfxA8atbGnnB5-...Tb8Tz?e=Y2XpHw
The link will be active for the next few days.

Made me chuckle too. "Our journalistic integrity is responsive yet stiff."
