Whether you get a single speed or a multi-gear bike, I highly recommend you get a full chain case. This will prevent the rain from hitting your chain and gear sprockets, thus almost completely eliminating the formation of rust on the moving parts. I store my bike outdoors, uncovered year-round, so I know from experience. I have an internal gear hub (IGH) bike with a full chain case. I've only lubed the original chain three times in two years. If not for the chain case I would have to lube the chain every couple weeks to avoid rust. Plus I'd have to clean the sprockets regularly.

Depending on how steep the hills in your area are will dictate how badly you wish you had gears. If it's flat, get a single speed. If hilly, try to get an IGH bike. My IGH bike has 8 speeds and I can get up fairly steep hills without much trouble.

Actually have one stored under all my bike seats.
Great call. I just ordered a pack of 100, for four dollars, that I'm going to send to my daughter, who commutes rain or shine. She can pass them out to all her cycling pals as party favors.

I found out a couple weeks ago that they also fit over my helmet when I am actually on the bike. Makeshift rain cover if it is really coming down!
