Trying to pick a bike
Hey all, posting for a friend,
He told me he was going to buy a base stumpy from the specialized site for 2650+ tax.
i told him that before he pulls the trigger on that one he should consult bikeforums to see if there are better options, as i have had a great experience with this site in different subsections.
So... is it a solid deal or should he get aomething else.

Our thoughts on this, just an opinion.
It's priced higher than it should be.
While the frame looks great and has a good geometry for it's intended purposes. The components could be better. Primarily the SX derailleur. It's a troublesome derailleur to keep adjusted. If your friend plans on doing any rough riding, the derailleur does not have a clutch to it, as some of us just found out. Your friend may find the need to upgrade the derailleur and depending on the friends knowledge on doing this could be an additional $80 on up depending what the upgrades will be and who installs it.
The other thing, is we (my son and I) have no knowledge on the Tektro Gemini brakes. We typically have been seeing bikes in this price range with a brakes that have 4 pistons, the Gemini are only 2. We didn't test, so can't tell you much more than that.
The reviews thought are positive on the bike. So your friend may want to look at those and the Youtube video's on it.
My son has decided to spend a few hundred more for an enduro Canyon that better fits his needs and will be saving more money for this the next few months. https://www.canyon.com/en-us/mountai...kes/torque/al/
But some options for your friend could be:
https://www.canyon.com/en-us/mountai...nfarbe=BK%2FGY
https://www.bikesonline.com/2022-pol...on-mountain-bi
https://www.bikesonline.com/2022-mar...nsion-mountain
https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/trance-29-3
https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/b...ey_orangelight
This all depends on what is close to your friend and the comfort level on buying an online bike.

My teenage son and I looked at one of these for him a few days ago but he did not test ride it since it was still being put together by the lbs.

He is going to go for the trek fuel ex 4 deore.
Regardless, i could imagine that at this price range , like with every bike the benefits are marginal and will probably only see such benefits if you are a professional rider.
stay safe!

I wouldn't say the benefits are marginal... nowadays, the 4-5k price point is getting you really nice components and you see a lot of enthusiasts on them. 1-2k is minimum, today IMO, for a quality full sus. I will say Specialized are priced a bit higher than others value brand (Giant or Trek) or consumer direct brands (Canyon) at equal component levels. However their are brands like Evil, Yeti, Nukeproof that raise the bar to Specialized in terms of component level to price.
Stumpys are good bikes, can't go wrong. It comes down to budget and intended use.

I just picked up the Orbea Occam H30 and have done several rides and can tell this is going to be my main trail bike over the others this coming year. I also have a Trek Stache 5 29 Plus hard tail, and Giant Yukon 2 fat bike in my stable. I have a bunch of different trail network offering every type of riding and lots of short punchy climbs. I really like how this bike has handled all the different trails conditions so far and can't wait to challenge it and myself more.
