Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Urgent Advise needed! Giant vs Merida

Morning all, new poster here, and i'm going a little crazy!!

Looking to get my first road bike, complete novice with a budget of around £600 (max) mark. Been shopping and found 2 bikes of interest, the Giant Defy 4 and the Merida Ride Lite 90. No idea about what is a good spec at all, but both recommended by the shops i visited.

Can anyone shed any light on these bikes? Anyone with experience of these bikes (Merida especially)? Pros and Cons?

Any advice greatfully received.

Regards

Jim

Giant is the #1 manufacturer of bikes in the world. Merida is #2.

Giant makes bikes for many people and assembles for many more.

Merida owners part of Specialized. They make their own bikes and assemble for many more.

Both will be decent quality. Pick the one that fits you best.

The Merida looks the part and feels right, so does the Giant. Just wondered if one bike was a little better than the other? I have an inkling for the Merida but certainly dont want to rule the Giant out.

I would always choose the Giant in UK because Merida has no presence there, but there are loads of Giant shops. Both fine makers, but Merida in Europe has a very limited retail operation. In Asia it would be a more difficult decision, because there are loads of Merida shops too.

I think they are now seeing the UK as a market they can get into though. They have been missing out on a large numbers of sales here due to their lack of presence.

So, Thinline, based on this post, would you opt for the Merida over the Giant?

I personally would go with Giant, broad based Engineering and excellent quality control. I'm buying their Giant Defy Advanced SL which is awesome.
Merida is in the same club.

I had two Meridas. The fact that Merida owns part of Specialized has little to do with Merida bikes. You would never ever guess that merida owns part of specialized by looking on (or riding) merida bike. Not like it is bad bike, but I would go for Giant. These both are entry level models, equal specs. For me only reason to choose Merida would be (was) lower price.

Hello.
I am buying a new bike and I cannot say which is a better choice regarding equipment. Both bikes I have tested and geometry is OK for me. Can you help decided which bike is better to buy?

Merida crossway 600

or
Giant Roam XR 1

Thank you in advance.
