Brooks too far forward, which setback seat post?

I posted another thread earlier and learned that my hand pain and inability to use the drops and hoods for very long are caused by my saddle being too forward. I was advised to slide it back a bit. Well, I can't! it's as forward as is possible, unfortunately. So I'm looking at seat posts with set back now. The current 300g Kalloy SP-342 is described as having 20mm offset. The 180g Thompson Elite set back seat post has 16mm of set back. Velo-Orange's 254g Grand Cru seat post, long setback provides 30.2mm.

Here's my question is the Thompson actually worse than my Kalloy for moving the Brooks saddle back?
and would this problem be solved by buying a smaller frame, like the 54cm Cross Check. This bike has never really fit me well. When I bought it, the shop ordered two sizes for me to try. The 58 fit like a horse, obviously too big. So I took the 56. I think I should have taken the 54 now. I've always heard to take the smaller of the two. Well, between the 54 and 56...the 54 is the smaller. 58 is out of the question. So frustrated.

With respect, you're getting way ahead of things, and I think confounding issues. I think you need to get additional insight before you decide to conclude what is causing what. I posted some questions for you in that other thread for you to consider and which I think will help you narrow down what is going on.

Good advice. Also, if you are between two sizes, there is no "rule" that you take the smaller of the 2. The larger size will generally let you get the handlebars higher which you may find desirable.
