I still have nightmares about being the new mechanic at my first shop and the ole guys would always give me the cottered bikes to overhaul. We stocked every cottered crank tool VAR made at the time and I still thought my head was going to explode to get those arms off. We stocked maybe 7 or 8 sizes of cotter pins and of course none of them would ever be the right size to fit correctly back in!
And look how long they have lasted, still in use after what, well over a hundred years, very few things can say that, especially now days, amazing and not necessarily in a good way.

And speaking of anxiety, couple weeks ago I get a PM about this.
https://bikerecyclery.com/blog/jim-m...g-frame-jm179/
Reach out to Justyne and go have a look, very cool, good shape, another one of Jim's personal bikes he built for himself.
$1400 ask, damn, no pot to pee in. Offer to do trade or partial for 82 Bianchi SL frame, no go. She says "I'll clean it up and put it up for sale in the next couple of weeks". I think it may not last that long if she really has other interest so I took off, sidelined it and flailed around for funding with no real luck.
Finally scrounged up about $400 and thought I might reach out and get her to let me put some kind of a deposit on it.
Then I get a text, the damn thing is on PDX CL for 2 hours at $1200, reach out and tell her I'm in, still without full funding. "It sold 2 minutes ago, sorry"
EF me, Guess I should have figured it out sooner, drug my feet a bit on account of the high ask but will be kicking myself for a long time.

I was wondering how that shook out, it is good to know that it exists though! I saw Merz made a post on his FB page with the ad, and a person commented saying they bought it. Perhaps you could get in touch with them in case they ever decide to sell. I can see if I can get you in touch with that person. Shoot me an email on how you might like to be introduced

I would like to have a conversation with him if he's in PDX but I'm not in a position to try and wrestle it away from him.
I'll probably reach out to Jim or Justyne if I decide to try and get a hold of him.
I already have 5 including the first one Jim built for himself which along with the price thing I let that trip me up.
That only happened because I sucked, momentary lapse of reason. That guy paid as much as I paid for my first two completes each. I was tapped, just couldn't wrap my head around that number, again, ef me.
I saw Jim's eFB, I can reach out but doubt the guy will sell anytime soon, let alone for ok $$$, he has big plans and is going to spend a lot more so....
And I don't blame him, I didn't flinch on the first two and would have gladly paid more.

Just what the heck is he talking about? The levers and brake calipers look like regular cable actuated items.

I hate reading stories like this. I am sorry it didnt work out in your favor today. In my short time here I have been surprised to learn how hard it is to put a deal together to fruition. I have already had 3 or 4 bikes I wanted badly including the Orange team Motebecane, The Blue Team Koga Miyata bike, Blue Bob Jackson and several others fall thru my fingers and it still stings. I feel for you....

DAMN THE TORPEDOS, ENGAGE, MAKE IT SO!!!!!
You have to go balls to the walls if you are`serious, do not hesitate or question yourself in the moment.
I have plenty others that I got because of this, many great deals, many one time bikes and many in between.
You have to trust yourself and your skill, once you screw up a couple of times and get the hang of it then you will know when to truly drop the hammer.
