Pretty much forces you over to Appian Way to get around. That's not going to get fixed for a while.

I don't know the area, and the effect of having to detour. But though a proper repair will take a while, it could probably be made passable to bikes with a couple of 3x9 planks. Or possibly the bike could be carried around the break.

About twenty feet deep and that red line shows how far back the pavement is undercut. A lot of organized rides come through here.

While "a couple of 3x9 planks" was intended hyperbole, my point is that this can be made passable to bicycles far faster than a proper repair to the road.

Of course, it might involve a bit of a hike or something, but I expect that a makeshift workaround would be better than waiting.

The break is between Castro Ranch Rd and Bear Creek Rd. My opinion is that this is not a sufficiently high traffic section to make repair a priority with the County Department of Public Works, which really has no money for any repairs of this magnitude. Just look at that little section a mile or 2 up the road where 1 of the lanes slid towards the creek and the county just closed off the 1 bad lane with barriers, stuck 2 stop signs on either end, and made it a one-lane road. I'm trying to remember when that happened and I'm thinking at least 2 or 3 years ago, maybe more. My guess is that this new washout section will remain closed for years as they try to get federal funds and go through the bureaucratic maze. Just think of the Moraga sinkhole where the town has no money to fix it and it's still a sinkhole almost a year later.

That be the guy... I'm pretty sure this is on the Pinole side of Alhambra, but a friend that lives off Bear Creek says there have been more slides. I'll go down later and get some pictures.

Pinehurst is always a mess in the winter. I can imagine how bad it is now with all of this rain we've had this season.

I saw the raw KTVU footage on their website. So funny, a couple of cyclists try to get across the washout by walking down on some concrete wall in the creek. Took some bushwhacking but they made it, though I think the workers on the road above were none too happy about it. Frankly, it's kind of stupid to do that, but I guess if you gotta get through...

The three bears loop looks doable again. The fences were down and they were finishing the lane stripes as of yesterday.

Yup, it's open. Rode by today. Note that the previous sweeping turn onto AVR from Castro Ranch Rd, where you used to be able to carry some downhill momentum onto AVR, is now a right turn with a STOP sign. Not sure I came to a complete stop today, but I'm guessing I won't be the only one. Probably a good idea, since the road just opened, to slow way down and check your surroundings before rolling through the stop.

Just as an aside, I was really shocked at the upgrade at this washout. I seem to remember the previous road simply had one of those 8-foot drainage pipes buried under the roadway and that was it. And now there's a massive bridge with railings, concrete piers, the whole package. Must have been some regs that required they replace washed-out drainage culverts with something more in line with todays regs. Could have been an endangered fish or something that required them to do what they did?

Yup. The bridge is massive. Combination of Fish and Wildlife, EBMUD, and being an important wildlife corridor, which required a larger and larger structure, to the point where it was cheaper just to build a bridge. The good news is you'll never ever have to worry about that again. The bad news is there's hundreds more culverts like this in the Bay Area, all of the same age, ready to fail... Also, I wonder how long until the taggers spray paint the hell out of it haha!

Rode the Bears today and saw the fancy bridge on Alhambra Valley. Still had that new bridge smell. Nice to be able to get through finally

I know nothing about specific regulations, but given that the last solution failed catastrophically, I'm certainly not surprised they went with a more robust solution.
