What an epic story, Tx for sharing, simply fantastic.
Jan Heine shares a similar very good one in BQ #69
He also has a great story of the Concours de Machines he rode that seems more than a little similar in BQ #61
I've told this story several times and it loosely applies here so...
Merz TW189 was built for PBP for Tom Winterrowd, Tom deemed it a bit small and had a Davidson rushed through that he rode instead to a very good result.
Bob Freeman helped Tom with both.
502nd out of 2113 and 27th of 129 Americans.
And while I wish the Merz would have gone, I probably wouldn't have it and in such great shape if it had since Tom did not ride it as much. He did ride it, did STP several times on it and said it did just fine.

Sure enough it's interesting to hear from people who finished in 58 hours, but if you can get someone who finished in 89 hours to open up, you're more likely to hear about life-changing stuff. Or even more extreme, hang around the finish and see those coming in just before and after the cutoff. People are shattered, dazed; emotions are raw.
I know my first finish in 2011, after turning my card in I just stood there. The card was the most important thing in the world to me, and he kept it. I didn't know what to do because all I knew how to do was ride my bike. And that was a finish with 10 hours in the bank.
