Buddy Bike
This is for sale near my. Has anyone here ever ridden one? Would it work if both riders were not vary close to the same weight?

Looks like steering would be a disaster.

Steering from the right-side seating position would seem to be challenging. But at least there aren't conflicting steering inputs.
As a tandem cap'n, I could see that unexpected weight shifts by the right-side rider while cornering might be more difficult to correct for as compared to a tandem arrangement with a close-to-common CG axis.
The cranks look like they might be designed for "beachfront boardwalk" leg input, not "record attempt on Ventoux" inputs. That's a lot of unsupported length to flex.
But other than that, it looks like fun - if it fits both riders.

The seats look adjustable enough. I'd think it would be more important that each rider was similar in weight.
My wife has mentioned getting a tandem and I thought that would be miserable ride (she doesn't like to ride). This thing looks like it was designed by a divorce attorney.

Nothing could possibly go wrong with that.

Based upon the Bob Barrett design which incorporates fourteen patented features over previous side-by-side designs
Bob built several one-off designs with different themes before settling on this design
Early production models made for sale used a standard road frame from Takara and everything bolted/clamped on
Such cycles could be returned to life as a Takara single road model without need for special tools.
Here is Bob and his wife Jill on their honeymoon trip to London, December 31, 1978 -
newspaper article of 22 December 1978 -
Bob constructed all of his prototypes and finalized his design working in a home workshop located in Berkeley, California ca. 1976.
He subsequently moved back home to Angola, NY.
The forum has had several prior discussion threads on these cycles.
They should come up with a search phrase such as "Barrett side-by-side"

A good solid hi-tensile frame to put all that on. And probably still wasn't as heavy as many Schwinns after the conversion to side by side.

another term for side-by-sides back in the golden age was sociables
it is not very evident in the photo posted above but one of the design's features is that the stoker rides slightly aft of the captain
this arrangement permits a somewhat narrower overall width
if one rider heavier than the other you just go down the road at a slight angle - it is not dramatic
have ridden one
