How many times have you had this conversation?

I was riding today and stopped at a store to take a quick break. A friendly 30 year old young lady sitting outside the store struck up a conversation with me (I'm sure she was flirting with me.....):

Noncyclist (NC): That is a really nice bike you have there. I bet you can't get one of those at Walmart.
Me: You are right!
NC: Is that bike expensive?
Me: What is expensive to you?
NC: Oh I can tell that is an expensive bike. Not to be nosy but how old are you?
Me: I'm 60.
NC: Wow! You are in great shape to be 60!
Me: That is why I ride.
NC: Do you ride a lot?
Me: I ride between 6000-8000 miles a year.
NC: Wow! I don't drive my car that much.
NC: How far have you ridden today?
Me: I've ridden about 60 miles and have 45 more miles to get back home.
NC: 60 miles! Where do you live?
Me: I live near the Speedway in Concord.
NC: You're going to ride all the way back over there?
Me: That's the plan. I'm cutting it pretty close on daylight today so I better get going.
NC: Well you be careful. There are a lot of people out there that don't know how to drive.
Me: I will. Nice talking to you.

I don't live in Concord so I've never had this conversation.

Unknown 30-year old women do not generally strike up conversations with me during my ride. But one can always hope.

Had many similar conversations. I hear the, "I don't drive my car that far" a lot. I'm a bit leary of questions about the cost of the bike. Probably just innocent curiosity, but anymore, who knows.

Me too. Fortunately, I've picked up most of my bikes for next to nuthin' so I can answer with assurance that, even though it's a nice bike, I didn't pay much for it.

Hey, I've actually been to Concord, NC!

Can't say I've had to many conversations with non-cyclist while on a ride. A few "get off the road" followed by a couple expletives from me.

I would be leery too about the "cost of the bike"....warning signs flashing.

We had stopped at a Circle K stop at the 90 mile point of a 200-km brevet when a truck pulled up. In addition to mom, dad and a kid, there was a beagle in the bed of the truck.

I asked the "mom" if I could pet her dog.

She responded, "I'm sorry, I don't have any change."

Rando rider or homeless? You decide.

It's all in how you carry yourself, It's the Karma you project.
It's also the fact that I look them in the eyes, not the breasts when I talk to them...LOL

I've never had that conversation because 30 yr. old women are too intimidated by my attractiveness. (At least that's my theory.)

Yup it has happened. Even tho I am 74 I am one of those really fortunate people that looks much younger. Throw on a t-shirt, shorts, a helmet, and sun glasses, it is pretty hard to guess my age at all. The result is I have had friendly conversations with girls young enough to be my granddaughters.

I rode my bike to work one day as I had left my car there, it's about 12 miles. A co-worker says "Wow, you rode all the way from home?"

Years ago a co-worker said an expensive bike was around $300 and there was 'no way' the bikes in the Tour de France could cost more than that.

Some friends rode across the U.S. and up the Eastern seaboard and near the end they stopped at a gas station to ask about the best way to Boston. The gas station guy says "Bahston? That's fahty miles from here!"

Regarding the cost of the bike, scientific study concludes that the answer should always be $495. Much more and they can't cope with the answer, much less and they won't believe you.

People start up chats with me all the time, ironic since I am pretty introverted. Usually it's about my bent, occasionally it's about how far, etc.

Regarding the babes, the ladies at the Dairy Queen always smile at me, seeming to understand.

I have gotten the statement after giving my age: "You could be my father!" to which I reply: "Really? What's your mother's name?"

The conversation never goes much farther.

I rarely get spoken to especially young ladies but now that we have a tandem people always come up and talk. It's the greatest conversation started.

Doesn't happen often but the last time after some conversation a 25- 30 yr old leaned over and inhaled ( I thought she was going to kiss me)-yea right, She said OLD SPICE you remind me of my grandfather. She laughed.Yep she hooked me, reeled me in and released me! True story friend has a ford Taurus and a Corvette. He drives the Taurus allot no one ever says anything. He drives the Corvette and the babes ask him for rides and dates all the time.
