Flash or steady for rear light?

I do not ride at night and only need lighting for heavy morning fog that is common in our area. No great concern for front light and only plan to use rear light in fog. My thought is flashing would be best. Any comments?

Flash is best, a solid red often gets lost in other car and signal lights. I see a lot of riders that run it any time they ride, day or night.

I would suggest a flashing headlight for fog, also.

I kind of miss the old leg lights of the 1970s. Coming up from behind the cyclist you saw a one eyed monster bouncing down the road. It wasn't something motorists just assumed they knew what it was and kept driving. Strap one on between your knee and the top of your calf and you had something that would definitely get a motorists attention.

I run a steady head light and flashing tail light in dark conditions.

Make sure your lights are bright and very visible in foggy conditions.

It was like an offset flashlight with a strap, clear forward and red back.

I usually use steady. Ever wonder why so many cops with their flashing lights get run into by the side of the road? That blinking can be hypnotic, especially to drunks and they head for it. If you're going to run a flashy, have a steady one on the other side.

Flashing light to get attention but not if there is another rider behind me.

I use one flashing on the pannier to get attention and throw a pool of flashing red light on the ground, a steady red on the bike because it's hard for drivers to judge distance using a flashing light, and, if there's any kind of precipitation or fog, another flashing red light on the back of my helmet cover so drivers from far away go "What the heck is that?" and pay closer attention.

Also have reflective tape all over the front and rear of the bike.

Flashing rear day and night. I use a steady front light at night along with a weaker, smaller flashing one in the front(in the daytime, the powerful one is flashing while the other smaller front flashing one is off).

Yep, I used one of those when, for a while, I commuted on bike to work. In fact, I found it recently in a drawer.

I added a taillight to both of my bikes for daytime riding when I get caught in the rain. Just want to be sure motorists can see me.

Yup. Flashing. Steady lights get lost in the ambient lighting.

Flashing behind me, front light flashing daytime; steady nite-time. That way I can tell my wife that I was flashing people on my bike ride and she can think whatever she wants.

Two lights rear for my MUP riding. One is a flashing red, one is a flashing white light. The reason for a flashing front in fog is not for you to see, but for others to see you. Same on a car. Many times at dusk you don't need a light to see, but you need one for others to see you. Think about approaching intersections and the like - you WANT to be seen.

Incidentally, red is probably one of the poorest national choices for a tail light - car or bike. Yellow is much more easily seen. I don't know why they choose red years ago. Perhaps it had to do with bordellos?

Flashing tail light, and a head light that switches from flash to steady and back when conditions warrant. Steady on trails, flashing on city streets, mostly just flashing during daytime.

At the risk of offending his Holiness, Grant Peterson, I run a flashing tail light at all times. Grant believes that a flashing light attracts drunk drivers, cannot imagine this being true nor do I know what he bases this on. Head light is flashing in the day time and night time, too. A flashing light was should attract the attention of a driver better than a steady state light (think aircraft navigation lights and strobes) so I use the flashing at all times. If I am riding at night purposely or even at dawn/dusk I will add a bright steady state light on the front. JMHO, YMMV, ABCDEF, etc...............

Check your local regulations. In many European countries, flashing tail lights are not permitted.

I know in California clear lights are not allowed in the rear, unless there is some kind of endoscopy going on...
