are Shimano R540 SPD-SL cleats compatible with shimano 105 pedals

Yes, assuming your 105 pedal is also an SPD-SL. All SPD-SL pedals use the same cleat. I think I read somewhere that the R540 is just an unbranded 105 anyway.
