Your 2013 Goals?
There's already a thread about how the Fifty-plus thread about how we met the 2012 goals we set for ourselves.
So the follow-up is - what are our goals for 2013?
Could me a mileage count, participate in specific events, a performance achievement ... anything you'd like to set as a target for the next year.

1. Completely get rid of this Achilles tendonosis (this is not tendonitis - a different animal). This stuff KILLS you.
2. Lose 10 pounds (or more)
3. Smile a lot
4. More speed on our slight (and not-so-slight) hills (goes hand-in-hand with conquering the Achilles tendonosis)
And, most importantly, help my wife to conquer her 7.5 years of very severe post-herpetic-neuralgia (from Shingles).

For 2013, I would like to become familiar with power measurement training. The only problem is that I would prefer to use a crank-mounted power meter, but riding what is basically a track bike on the road, the only unit that will give me a perfect chain line is the $3,000 SRM, which uses a Shimano Octalink bb and track-standard 144mm bolt circle rings (both good), but requires you to send the unit back to the factory just to replace the battery (after 1500 hours - about two years for me), and this track-specific unit is not waterproof (bad). The other units use road cranks, so I'd have to experiment with mounting the ring on the inside of the spider and packing spacers inside the rear cog - not really elegant or feasible with a real track hub (I use the bike on the track as well).
The idea is to use the powermeter to optimize my effort in next year's Furnace Creek 508. But first they have to accept my entry in April...
I did have a goal of riding London-Edinburgh-London, but because they only accept 750 riders (and I'm sure there are a good 3,000+ randonneurs out there with hearts set on riding it, and 2,250+ will be severely disappointed that they can't get in, and I am reluctant to be one of them), I decided to use my limited vacation time to take advantage of an opportunity to ride for a couple of weeks in Italy instead. I'll be in the Abruzzo region (across from Rome on the Adriatic side of the Appennini), drinking Montepulciano, watching the finish of a Giro stage in Pescara, maybe seeing a seldom-seen Wagner opera (Rienzi) in Roma.
And I'm getting a trip to Maui set up. The goal is to ride up Haleakala on the fixed gear, very early in the morning, catching sunrise on the way up. Debating if I'll take a double-sided rear wheel with a freewheel so I can coast down.

Here goes:
1. 5000 miles total. Same goal as last year, but I get to travel less this year, so less adversarial intervention by the travel department.
2. Get down to 180 pounds. Started riding in April '11, weighing about 230. Wished it had come off faster, but it is coming off.
3. Complete the Mt Shasta Summit Century - got 97 miles and a bit over 10K altitude last summer, want the whole enchilada in '13.
4. Ride a century in every month - metrics allowed in the icky weather.
5. Get fit and ready to go for a full cyclocross season in '13 - no more dabbling about.
6. Have fun (not quantifiable, but certainly know it when I see it).

Last year I made it 1200 miles, this year goal is to beat that. It was my first full year of riding. I would also like to get up to a 17 MPH average. So I guess I have 2 goals. Oh yeah, I also want to ride the "Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail in Wisconsin" Just because it has old train tunnels.

Why bother? The world ends on 12-21-12.
-----------------------------------------------------------
1. Keep the miles up
2. Do at least one century(miler).
3. Do the Tour-de-Cure for my area(at least the metric).
4. Try to do the Cap2cap ride(miler century) to support the Virginia Capital to Capital trail (Williamsburg to Richmond, or Richmond to Williamsburg, depending on your point of view) - https://www.vabike.org/cap2cap/ , https://www.virginiacapitaltrail.org/....4999/-77.0769 .

1. 3000 miles tandem + 3000+ miles on the single
2. at least one 200K so I can assess the feasibility of a DC (bucket list item)
3. Maybe 3-4 centuries on the single
4. Continue to do a bunch of 100K's on the tandem
5. Get my Cat 2 son on the tandem once
6. Get down just below 190 lbs from whatever I weigh now
7. Increase steady-state climbing power to 200 Watts (Strava est.). I'm at just over 150W now.
8. Start riding the tandem twice/month with the Veterans Administration Double Vision program

Cycling goals for 2013
1. Exceed my 2012 mileage (4000+/-)
2. Have a 200 mile day (What is that called?)
3. To find a lighter weight bike that feels as comfortable as my LHT, which will enable me to...
4. Ride with the fast group on the Tuesday night 25
5. RAGBRAI
6. And one other state ride besides BRAN
7. A 1500+ mile tour
8. To make Loveland Pass my B@#$%
Question for Denver Cat, along with wishing your wife the best in her battle. How old (or young) would you advise someone getting the booster or shot for shingles? I think age 60 is the norm, but I've been wondering lately if it wouldn't be a bad idea to push that up. I just turned 55.

1. Equal my 2012 mileage. *(About 3100 so far)
2. N+1 I've been thinking about a carbon bike to go with my old classic steel framed bikes. *
3. At least one and hopefully several centuries. *
4. Try at least one gravel road MTB event ride.
5. Up my speed so as to be able to hang with the "A" group on the Saturday morning*Early Risers group ride from the LBS. *....at least on a good weekend!
6. Loose another 10# and get down to 165 so I am no longer too short for my weight. *

From Minnman under '2012 Goals...':
Minnman, thanks! (really, no kidding!)
I always have trouble setting (and keeping!) goals for myself. Instead, I do much better if somebody else does it for me (Don't ask me why -- I don't know. It just works that way.) But, as long as life doesn't get in the way, I think I can do it. That's "only" 40 hundred mile weeks.
So... 4,000 miles in 2013 it is!
... But I'll have to step up the pace. Currently my mileage is down around 75 miles/week.
GeorgeB: Granted, people in the 50+ group have a variety of attitudes towards miles/smiles and so on. But one of the wonderful lessons that we all learn when we are new is that 1000 miles really isn't that much. It seemed stupendous to me in my first year, when I got to 1500 or so. But not now.
So I'm curious to see what you do in 2013. I'll wager that it will be in the neighborhood of 4000. That's my guess.

Haven't really thought that far ahead.
Get my Mondial award and Ultra Randonneur awards.
Have fun.
And I'll work out some other specifics later.

Drop 40 lbs and ride this event. 114 miles 12,000 ft of climbing. It's in May and I will turn 50 in May so it will be a good way to celebrate the big 5-0!
I did a similar event (Ride Around the Bear) when I turned 40 just to see if I could. I ended up doing it 4 times and this ride once. If I can better my time while hitting 50, that's a good thing!
