Shimano 6208 Shifter Woes
I screwed up. I think I allowed the mounting screw to loosen and I broke off the tabs. Now I can't get the lever to work in friction mode. Do you need the tabbed washer thingy to provide resistance and keep the lever in position? AND, the mounting screw turns with the lever and loosens when the lever is pulled back. Is there a way to set these levers up in friction mode?
jeff
edit: I found a NOS right 1050 shifter on eBay for 20 bucks and I have a left already. But I hate throwing pieces out. Can I use that 6208 lever for more than a keychain?

Sadly, once the little tabs have broken off, a 6208 won't work dependably in friction or index mode.
I could use the mounting bolt, however, am short one of those.
Please let me know if it might be available.

I had the same issue with a 6208 shifter set off ebay. I noticed tabs were broken so i returned them.

I've been rescued and Doc gets a screw.
I have now experienced two weaknesses in this group: a worn out plastic bushing in a rear derailleur some years ago, and now these silly little tabs. Neither part replaceable.

I think I've seen the worn bushing in the 6207 normal cage.
But I never felt they shifted well without Shimano sprockets with their nice tooth shapes. On Regina or Maillard freewheels, not better than Campagnolo. Not even when they were new!

Thanks, Classtime.
Have never had a bushing wear out on one of these RD's, but agree that virtually any friction shifted system from the early-mid 80's is improved when paired with a Shimano UG freewheel or cassette. Even my Campagnolo Super Record setup uses a Shimano 600 freewheel and Shimano pulley wheels p[aired with a modern SRAM PC870 chain. Really shifts nicely!
