This week has been unseasonably warm on my pre-dawn/post dawn rides. I usually ride out into the wilderness on my mountain bikes and watch the sunrise as I stroll along. It had been quite awhile since i've seen anything interesting.

This week i have seen three coyotes on two different rides. They may all be the same pair as the first pair i saw early the other morning were eating on some deer carcasses on an old byroad. They looked very majestic as they galloped through the tall grasses at sunrise. I keep thinking i should bring the camera.

The first morning i would have had an excellent pic. This morning the coyote got a better jump on me and I would have needed a telephoto lens. I've also been seeing a lot of geese and a few pheasants. Then of course there are the dreaded domesticated dogs.

All I see is Kangaroos, the heat we're getting here at the moment (30C - 37C, 86F - 99F) is brining out god dam flies, snakes, mosquitous and Kangaroos, I almost ran over one on the trails while Mountain biking a few week ago...grr.

On a short ride yesterday (my normal route near house) I saw a turtle and a family of ducks. It's also pretty common for me to see gators and rabbits on my route.

Squirrels and a family of ducks in a stream in winter. We don't get too many coyotes near Pittsburgh.

Though in the past I have seen foxes and deer.

I was out backpacking once and a deer ran across the path. He couldn't have been more than 5-6 feet in front of me. It scared the heck out of me.

Ducks, rabbits, foxes, cats, dogs, snakes, wallabies, sheep, cows, horses, emus, chooks, alpacas (I go past a farm), and a huge 5 foot goanna that hit 15mph along the trail before finding a gap in the chainlink fence - I had no idea those things could move like that!

We have a bazillion magpies in Canada ..... but they are better behaved than the Australian ones ... they don't dive bomb your helmet like they do over there!!!

Saw some dolphins at Butterfly beach across from the Biltmore on my ride Sunday...

Heard some noises in the backyard a couple nights ago. Flipped on the porch light and caught 4 racoons in the act of ransacking my dog's food bowl. They stopped, looked up with an expression of, "Hey, turn off the lights, we're eating!" Then they went right back to scarfing! I ran to the garage, fetched my SKS and when I got back, they were gone! Eatened every last kibble and even dumped the water-bowl over for good measure!

Couple summers ago while riding across Montana, I took a rest stop and noticed a wolf was checking me out from across the street. Must've smelled my PB&J, he looked hungry, kinda sad.

Bald eagles and red tailed hawks. The eagles will stay in the trees if you go past them in a car but seem to be scared of people on bikes.

Deer, canadian geese, foxes, kingfishers, lots of northern flickers, the occaisional americak kestrel, plenty of assorted finches, orioles, and other small birds. Before the cold weather, I see an osprey at a lake I ride past, gobs of turkey vultures (an awesome sight when they are circling in the hundreds), the occaisional eagle or hawk, snakes (usually bull or garter, sometimes rattlers), magpies, starlings, red-winged blackbirds....etc. My daily commute takes me along a river for quite a ways, through the midst of natural areas and farmer's fields. Love my ride!

Do dead animals count? I ran over a freshly road killed possum a few weeks ago. The squishing sound really is disgusting.

Have not done any trail riding since winter hit us. SO the most recent real sight to remember was in the New York state, catskill area. I saw a buck, and had several encounters with it during the 20 mile stretch. Probably 10 rabbits, and also what looked like to be a possum. There was a little furry white behind sort of hobbing its way across the trail.
I would ride and a rabbit would just leap away from my front tire. Nice area that was...

My father and I saved a baby echidna from getting run over the other night. The ol' man got pricked for his trouble.

Last fall I saw a Great Blue Heron while riding through auburn hills michigan. In another case of a blue heron, one was trying to eat fish out of a family friends pond, so he shot it with a cleaner pellet out of his .25 Beeman, causing it to fly off and not come back. By the way, this guy now has his pond covered with a net.

Once an even bigger bird got my dad by surprise. He was playing golf at a course next to a zoo. An escaped south american condor landed on his golf ball and took it. My dad called the cops, who contacted the zoo, and the huge bird was safely recovered.

A couple of weeks ago, I was camping and decided it would be fun to set up a tarp to sleep under instead of using my tent. There were no doors of course, so wildlife was free to come by and bother me. A turkey vulture smelled the food I had in my backpack, which I was stupidly using as a pillow. Lets just say that I find being woken up by an eager turkey vulture right by your head is almost as pleasent as a jumping into a frozen-over lake.

Since the only things around here that live in the woods are hunkered down for the winter, I have not seen much. There is a particularily obnoxious flock of Turkeys though. But I don't see them riding. The damn things hang out in my yard and scare the bejeesus out of my dogs.

That's some wild life for sure. When Interbike used to be in Philadelphia, we would take bikes with us so we could ride around Philly when not trapsing up and down the hall talking bike stuff. On one excursion in South Philly, an overwrought citizen came bounding out of a small grocer with the craziest looking human I have ever seen on his heels brandishing a very big knife. In the space of like 2 seconds this wildman changed direction and crossed the street in our direction. Another homeless guy looked at us and said something like, " Don't worry, that's Charlie. He does this every couple of weeks." My friend decided to not trust the homeless dude and he pedaled off. But I stood my ground. Call it curiosity or stupidity. Whatever. Charlie came barreling by and the other homeless dude calmly knocked him down and took away his weapon. They both got up and walked away. The street became quiet again. And I am sure I had the look of total amazement on my face. Everyone around just continued their business like nothing had happened.

The usual rabits, squirrels and ducks... Saw a beautiful goose the other day in the local pond. But not much else.

Although today I did see some deer tracks... right where the bike path meets the city street... couldn't help but wonder what happened to the deer.

I see alot of deer, a few foxes, some coyotes, a gator now and then, and a few bobcats lately. Oh yeah, can't forget the hogs and racoons.
