in doubt of Carbon wheelset for a roadbike
ey everybody, new here looking for your advice.
I recently bought a BMC roadmachine Three, super satisfied with the bike.
but, do want to change to a carbon wheels, I live in Bogota, lots of mountains and bad roads.
was looking at the roval terra cl that are in a good discount, around 1100 usd,(local shop) there is also hunt 40 at around the same price (including tax and sipping) then there are higher options, like alpinist cl, campagnolo chaman and ones deda i think.
what would u recommend? I road 3 to 4 days a week, usually 600 to 1400 mts of elevation per ride.
the roval seems like a good deal, due to dealership guarantee, they are lightweight and believe can resist the abuse of the bad roads here.
thanks for your help

I bought them because the LBS that sells Specialized also runs some of the group rides that I ride. They were price comparable to similar quality online options like Light Bicycle with the DT Swiss hubs at the time. Also, the DT Swiss hubs can be had with the N3W for an Ekar cassette which matters to me.

I’ve got about 14,000 miles on my Terra CLs. I’m a big guy. They’ve never even needed to be trued. I did have a rear wheel warrantied a few thousand miles ago when I hit a nasty, huge, jagged pothole at about 20 mph in bad light. Hard to blame any wheel for that.
I have about 17,000 miles on the previous model before they were called Terra’s on my Roubaix. Never had to touch them either.

To complicate your decision; I have Hunt 50s and they have been fine for a year and a half, but have not taken any significant hits either. They come with a two year warranty. Had a return due to a shipping problem and the wheel was replaced immediately (with the return of the bad wheel)
Just rode them today after riding a different set of wheels (30s) and was amazed at the difference. Roval have a good reputation.

I have a pair of the Roval Terra CL wheels and recommend them. At $1100 they are a bargain. And they'll work nicely with 28mm wide tires.

Thanks for your comments, well haven bought any yet, but now specialized complicate my decision, roval terra cl still at around 1100,
But now they have front alpinist clx and rear terra clx for less than the pair of terras CL.
at around 850 for alpinist clx and terra clx, what you guys think on that match? know that terra have wider internal widght.
would that matter? or the combination will be just fine?
i would end up with lighter wheels for a better price plus better hubs i think.
waiting on your advice to pull the trigger.

they're both great wheels, i have had no problems whatsoever with them, but the widths are so different - 21 vs 25 - that the range of tire sizes which would fit well on both would be pretty small IMO. the alpinist start to get a bit of a "light bulb" profile by 30mm, and 32mm is the most i'd ever do on them. conversely, on the terra, 28mm is the absolute minimum. so basically you're limited to 28-32. could be interesting to run 28 up front and 30 or 32 in the back though, if that's your thing.
i would have no worries about the terra with 32mm on bad roads. i ride mine on gravel and some singletrack even. but the alpinist on really bad roads, i wouldn't do it regularly. it's a well made, strong wheel for it's weight no doubt, but it's a VERY light wheel.

Thanks Mschwett,
would not be doing gravel at all, I just do paved road, 28mm in both tires, would maybe try when the ones I have tier down a rear 30mm.
roads here are mainly ok, pot holes everywhere that u get to know them with time.

I totally get your concern. Not a lot of potholes here, but I'm always hitting small rocks kicked up on the shoulder of the road. Had a few hits that instantly blew a tube. I can only imagine what that kind of impact would do to a CF rim.

I also bought a Roval Terra CL wheelset earlier this year (at Koyote's recommendation) for my gravel bike and love them, but their 25 mm internal width seems marginal for 28 mm wide tires, despite Roval's specification thereof as the minimum tire width. I would feel safer with 30 mm tires on these wheels.
