I would definitely be interested in buying a multi-speed fixed hub. When we send emails to SunRace, we should link them to this thread.

Just because lots of people already want this hub, I don't think that makes it selfish if people want to dedicate it to Sheldon. In reality, I doubt whether putting his name on it will in any way influence SA's plans (or lack thereof) to manufacture the hub. But he certainly did a lot for fixed riders, including making many of us aware of this hub in the first place, so it seems a fitting tribute. However, I do take your point that a straight-up donation to a worthy cause is a more generous memorial than buying bike equipment.

Spawn of Satan
If SA releases this hub I will buy one even if it has Koffee Brown's name on it.
I do think this is a great idea and memorial to Sheldon. I also think SA knows a good advertising gimmick when they see one. I see win/win all around.
Now, will it actual happen...

Hell, I my get one if it ever comes out, and I don't particularly like geared hubs to begin with... Sheldon was seldom wrong about bike stuff so if he liked it it's worth a shot

Email sent, I think i may Start sending one every week or at least once a month
I will order 4 of these the first season they are out. Two for me, one for the brother one for the girlfriend. I think they will be great for people just getting into fixed gear, people who can't spin down a massive hill or don't have the power to kick big hills. I think i could get the GF to jump from a 3-speed hub to a 3-speed fixed, easier than 3-speed to single speed.
I will be a Total ASC hub shill/
You had me going there a for a minute i was about to run into work and order a disc hub, This was very nearly brilliant.

I found a link here to SheldonBrown.com. On the right side just a little bit down. It's dated october of 07. They are at least aware of the man. Hopefully this or something similar does happen.

There hasn't been much news on this front but hopefully the right folks will peek at this every now and then. I'd be in for at least two hubs right off the bat.

I started another post around here somewhere, but the SRAM I-Motion 9sp IG hub takes a regular old thread-on freewheel. Seems to me you could kludge on a fixed cog to see if it works while backpedalling... and if it does, then machining a lock-ring thread or figuring out some other cog-fixing method might be a tad more approachable than the other methods of converting other IG hubs to fixie. Anyone got one of those new Swobo bikes to fool around with? 9sp fixie anyone?

^^^ Sky from Swobo was nice enough to email me back and let me know that my info is erroneous--the iMotion hubs don't take a regular freelwheel, they take a cog just like the other IG hubs, freewheel is inside the hub.
Dang.

Ooh, I want one , and I think it would be great to attach Sheldon's name to the hub! I wouldn't be aware such a hub had ever existed without Sheldon's enthusiasm for SA in general.

Do we really need to use the death of a cycling hero to coerce a corporation to release an obscure item?
I mean, I really do want one, but I would rather leave Sheldon's name as sacred as possible.

You know what though? That would be a really fitting tribute to the man. To have his name etched into thousands of fixed gear 3 speed hubs. Spinning around and around day after day all over the world! To have the part that bears his name be an integral part of numerous oddball fixed gear builds. I don't know how I'd feel about SunRace profiting from using the name, but if a certain amount of each sale were donated to a charity on behalf of his estate, I think it would be an incredibly fitting tribute.

I agree with the idea of respecting the man but it's not like anybody is trying to put his picture on a Pepsi can or anything. I understand keeping his memory pure, etc, but I can't see this turning into a big marketing circus.

What we don't want SunRace to know is that we'd be buying that ASC hub with or without Sheldon Brown's name on it, right?

SunRace would of course have to obtain permission from Sheldon's family before using his name. In my totally baseless opinion, I could the family agreeing to it for a certain payment, that money going to Sheldon's favorite charity causes.

This is true of all internal gear hubs. The only way this can work is with a hub designed to be fixed, or with a hub which has been modified such that it is. There are no shortcuts.
