Advice on the right headset for an old bike.
Hi there,
I'm a bike building novice and have a question. I've got an old Schwinn PDG70 mountain bike and am considering this replacement headset:
The one I'm looking at (Tange Levin NJS Headset) comes in 26.4mm & 27mm sizes.
I'm uncertain about the size to go with. My bike takes a 25.4mm quill.
I'd have posted links to the product and catalogue page for the bike but I'm not allowed to since it's my first post.
Thank you for reading!

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Unfortunately the quill size doesn't help. There are 3 standards for 1" headsets. One is the Japanese standard, (JIS), one is European (ISO), and one is the USA standard that Schwinn historically adhered to.
So, knowing where and when the bike was made is a starting place, but no assurance without knowing what Schwinn would have spec'd at the time.
For instance, when American brands started sourcing in Japan, they took delivery of JIS bikes, but later started demanding ISO.
On the bright side, if you know specific details of where ann your bike was produced, someone here might remember what was spec'd.
BTW - you say it takes a 25.4mm quill. If that's the actual diameter where it goes into the fork, then you have 1-1/8" fork & headset (since the fork OD must be bigger than the ID). So neither 1" headset would fit. That's good news because there's only 1 standard for those.

Welcome to BF.
Welcome to the universe of headsets. You can post photos into your personal gallery, and we can see them. I think it's a 1 1/8" threaded fork, but photos will confirm.

Yes - PDG70 takes a 1 1/8 threaded fork - both 1991 TIG’d and 1992 lugged
I believe the OEM headset on both bikes was a Ritchey Logic - but not positive

Incredible! Thank you all so much for taking the time! So in my search I should be looking for a 1 1/8" threaded headset. I really appreciate it!

Lookup and know what "Stack height" is and how to measure as well as cup diameter.
