Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

if the vaporware (Ui2, Di3 or whatever they're going to call it) ever condenses, it'll be interesting to see if they make a real run at having this technology go mainstream by more competitively pricing it.

Personally I find beer to be vastly more interesting then Di2.

I like canned beer. Not to drink, yecch, but cans are a lot easier on your tires than broken glass. So I vote for yahoos drinking out of cans and tossing them.

My friend starting to ride bought a DI2 equipped bike from BikesDirect. I did not stop him. He wanted what's the best he can get for 4K. I really did not know how to explain BD. But he was set on it.

It will be here soon and I will try it out even though it is a much larger frame than I would ride.

I would go to Pathmark (local low budget supermarket in the NY area) and buy six packs of 'BEER' (no frills, the cans said 'BEER') for $1.00 (early 1980's). I would drink three Molson Goldens or some other decent beer, then switch to 'BEER', because once you were into beers 3-12, it didn't matter anymore.

I don't have to make stupid tradeoffs -- do I power up a little rise in the big ring, or take a chance on a chain drop if i go to the small ring by shifting under power?* Now I just do the right thing. When standing on a hill that gets progressively steeper do I pick a gear that is a little too low or a little too high just to avoid a standing shift? Now I might shift 4 or 5 times over a fairly short rise. When standing over a rise or for ass-relief on a long climb, on any system you shift to a harder gear, and then shift back to an easier gear as you sit back down. Di2 changes the timing of the way I do it in a way that's hard to describe, but it makes the transition much smoother. I stay in the drops a lot more now since it's not such a pain in the ass to shift to a bigger cog or chain ring from the drops. There are other non-riding considerations as well**

* One reason I got a new frame is that I damaged the old one by a chain drop that put a nasty gouge in the frame. A chain catcher helps, but it's not perfect.
** I found the shifting effort on DA 7900 to be way harder and annoying that on 7800 or even another bike I have with 105. I've just hated it for two years, and got sick of it. Also I broke 3 RD cables in about 10K miles. No cables, nothing to break.

I had shifting problems on my 7800 related to the cables and switched to Gore I understand that cables are a bigger issue with 7900. D12 is interesting and when I get a new bike worth thing about. Are you going to sell the R3SL frame?

Maybe after a few canned beers I can be talked into buying Di2....some cans of Sapporo might do the trick.

The Mets are doing better
Mets leave Braves all wet as four pitchers combine for two-hit shutout … https://atmlb.com/k3GHJF

Guess the Mets and Pcad are getting back into the game?

Sixpoint brewery just started selling beer in something other than kegs for the first time... and it is cans only. I hope more breweries follow suit. Canned beer is splendid.

What was this thread about again? Blood clots in the lungs? That sounds really ****ty.

Actually, I think this thread is about Di2. Blood clots is a few down.

Although it's unlikely I'll ever switch from Campy, I think most people would own Di2 (or some future version of electronic shifting) if the price was right. I've spent a great deal of time riding with someone who has Di2 on his Wilier. It's precise. The battery life is a non issue. It's pretty sweet, but expensive as balls. Essentially cost prohibitive.

Now if Shimano releases the $1200 Ultegra version, I think it sells like hotcakes. The snobs will still buy Di2 with its hefty markup, much like the Campy lovers buy SR over Record.

Now back to beer. I bought a new keg for the kegerator yesterday.

Correct.

Not for nothing, but between the low expectations for the Mets in 2011 and the ridiculous list of team stars still on the DL approaching the All-Star break, the fact that they are @ .500 and within spitting distance of the NL Wild Card race is a complete and utter miracle. They are getting stellar pitching, particularly from Gee (won his first 7 straight starts as a Met) and Niese and the Isringhausen/K-Road set-up/closer combo.

If that stays constant and they get Ike and Wright back. Angel Pagan came back off the DL last night and hit a HR. There you go.

Don't get your hopes up. The Marlins are in a nasty streak right now but they'll be better than the Mets (again).

I had a canned Stella Artois last night before the FreakBike Militia ride in West Palm Beach (don't ask but it was fun) and it wasn't too bad.

While not always possible, I like to support canned beer. I also like Stella, so when it was released in cans a few months ago, it became my beer of choice for a few weeks.

Like you said, it wasn't too bad. Best on tap, good in bottles, not too bad in a can.

Agreed. I get it at the Ft. Pierce Marina FridayFest a street party on the first Friday of the month along the Indian River. Bud taps are more plentiful but the little tent with the Stella tap is my destination.
