Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm looking to upgrade my crapolla low end Alex wheels. I am on a tight budget, and it must be 8sp compatible. Any suggestions. I'm looking on the 100-150USD range for the whole wheelset. TIA

You are going to find it hard to get a significant upgarde at that price point.

Anything is better then the flexy, impossible to keep true wheels I have now. I'm not a advanced or big rider (170lbs) in any respect, so if I can feel the wheel flex, I know they must be crap. A good LBS i trust has had to true the rear wheel three times since I purchased the bike in late October and the front twice. Need something a little better to hold me over till I can aford better. I have been burned/screwed on ebay (even from power seller and the like) to many times to count, so I would like to try to stay clear from there.

I have to agree with Euro. If you can sped $200 you can get a set of Open Pros with Ultegra hubs from Performance (and if you order today you can get 10% off if you link through the supergo.com site). That set will get you good wheels for about as low as you could spend for a quality wheel.

There's a pair of FSA wheels, complete, in the Nashbar sale catalog right now for $200. If I needed a set, I would buy those like right now. They look great and are probably of far better quality than you have now...

I bought my Suns from Nashbar *gasp* for $150. I am very pleased with them, they are good wheels. Nashbar currently stocks some whellsets of equal calibre and price, so I'd check that out.

supergo korso wheels. I have a set and they're worth more than the $89 you'll spend on them!

Well since Supergo.com doesn't exist anymore I doubt this is an option. Also Joe is in PA so there is no Supergo store within 1000 miles of him so looking for a set still on the floor of a Supergo store isn't going to work either.

Although it is a little out of your price range, Performance is offering an OpenPro/Ultegra wheelset for $175 at their online site.

Thanks for the input. I may up my budget to $200, so then the FSA's are a option. I also like the look of the Cannandale Cuda/Sun's at Nashbar. In at 180$, its only a little more then I intended to spend. TheKid14, are these the ones you bought, how do you like them?

What about these. Does anyone know how these are, and are they 8sp Shimano compatible.

I had a set of those for about 500 miles. Not a terrible wheel...will need tured after a couple of rides as they are machine built. For that $175 deal on the OP at Performance honestly I would go there for sure. If you can order today you can get a 10% off coupon by linking to the Performance site through the old supergo.com URL which makes them $157.5 before tax and shipping.

I don't blame you. I got rid of my Alex wheels once I had to put them in to be trued for the 2nd time in as many months. I replaced mine with Shimano Tiagra/Mavic CXP-23 wheels and I love them. I got them on eBay for $99 plus shipping -- so look around, you'll find something.

These ones are slightly different. The rims are Sun ME14A, mine are Sun Venus. The only difference I can see between the two is that mine is more aero and the ME14A is 420 g., 20 g. lighter than mine. The rims are paired to what looks like a Cann. Coda front hub and an Expert rear hub.I have heard bad things about the Codas, but I have had no problems so far. The hubs are heavy, but silky smooth.

So, basically they are pretty close. I like mine alot for a budget wheelset. The only downside is spoke count-28 and weight-mine are 1900 g. That's pretty heavy, but if you are'nt really serious, it's okay. A plus is due to the spoke count, too. More spokes makes the wheel stiffer.

Hope this helps with the choice,
RBM

This isn't a bad deal at all if you are interested in all black. There is still a 10% coupon valid as well.

The only other option is to wait for some used wheels on ebay to come up that you would be pleased with, but I have to agree that the Open Pro/Ultegra is a pretty good buy.
