Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Unreasonable never gets anywhere.

I negotiate a lot in my work, as you might imagine, so I'm always looking for the deal. The chase can pump my adrenaline. Years ago I bought a car, and the dealer accepted my first offer, which I thought was rather lowball. I was shocked. My wife says that I never liked that car because I always felt like I left money on the table. She was right, I never liked the car, but it was for other reasons. But, I also felt like I left money on the table.

Routine stuff I don't ask, but on higher price stuff I always do. It pained me to pay full price for bikes last year.

Well, a few things. First, I think that the calculation is a lot of best case/benefit of the doubt. That's not a remarkable amount of power but exceedingly few people IRL would see that kind of result. There's also the climb, which certainly would have brought down the average (I assume this estimate is on the flats?). And the estimate is 1mph slower - at 15mph, gaining 1mph is nothing. At 24mph, gaining 1mph is so, so huge. IMO and IME, 24.9mph, on a road bike, at 264w, is pie-in-the-sky.

Wonder what the Ultegra version will come in at.

Found it - $2,500+. :-(

Only one way to find out - you gotta get yourself a Canyon Aeroad and a set of Zipp 808s IRL and see what you can do!

Yeah, gosh. If only it was 175mm cranks and 52/36. That's the only thing holding me back.

I've been dreaming of switching the drive train to Di2, and eyeballing the new Domanes with the 12 speed version. The SL7 comes in at $6,500. If I just upgrade my SL5, I'll have essentially the same bike and be all in for the same amount. I like my blue better than the current colors, but I do really like the current bluish color. Tough decision.

Well, slap me down. It's looking like less overall spend to just drop the $2,500 on the upgrade. I was looking at the 2021 pricing.

Mind you, if I were made of money, I'd already have an order in.

Me too!

It's only a dilemma when the money is not readily available.

The guy in the white short sleeve, he wasn't with our group and nobody knew him but he started hanging around once he saw we had support. He should have turned back sooner but when you're climbing slow you stay warm and don't think about later. At least the first time you do it.

One time I stuffed a cheap ski jacket into my large Camelbak. I was totally comfortable on the way down but it sucked having that thing on my back for all the climbing. I started carrying a nylon hooded windbreaker as a fourth layer and everything fits in my back pockets including chemical warmers for my feet. Pcad taught me that one.

Are you factoring in the sell-off of your current groupset with the upgrade route?

For me, getting rid of two exposed cables with the new Ultegra would be nice. Making the jump to electronic shifting would be nice, too. The opportunity cost of upgrade is too rich for my blood, though, at least until the fat bike/MTB bike slot is filled.

It doesn’t seem that far off imo- 265 w/ drafting and super aero seems possible in relatively calm conditions

No, but I don't know how much a 105 rig would fetch.

I was just going off of the following:

2020 Domane SL5 - $3,000 (spent)
Wheelset - $1,300 (spent)
Di2 upgrade - $2,500

2022 Domane SL7 = $6,600
Sell SL5 in original form ($2,000 - $2,500 depending on the state of bike craze)
Keep carbon wheels as second set

I would have to spend more to buy a new bike than I would to upgrade.

I could do the upgrade at some point, but getting wife approval may be somewhat of a challenge. Of course, if I did it I would want to go all in and get those aero bars. I don't know what it would get me on a practical level - I just have this compulsion to have the "cool" stuff.

I don't have any other wants/lusts as far as bikes go. I don't have much use for any other types of bikes beyond what I have, and don't see owning more than one road bike.

I just keep thinking what ELSE I could buy with $4300. Like a better rig to run Zwift, maybe a Kickr and a Kickr Climb, since it's now indoor riding season. A nice new wheelset for the Ritchey. Assioma power meter pedals. A saddle bag for each bike, instead of constantly moving the same one around. A new helmet. Snacks.

I dunno. Espresso is doled out in such small aliquots. Give me a big mug of strong, hot coffee with no additions.

Black as night,
Hot as Hell,
Strong as love,
And pure as an angel's kiss.

That's fine. We use a cheap French Press which gives fantastic results. That said, if someone dropped a fancy $1000 DeLonghi chromed device in my lap, I would be ok with that too.

Yes but NOT wired-less. You have to use current generation Di-2 wired shifters. The wireless only comes in hydraulic disc format.

Sad!
