Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not sure why no on wants to help you with this . . . It's flipping your stem. By flipping it, you either make your bars lower or higher, depending on the position of the stem before you flip it. If the stem is angled down you'll be in a more aero position for racing, etc. If you're less flexible or are more concerned about comfort than speed, you would normally flip the stem so it is angled more upward.

The whole flip it thing is an inside running joke.

Aesthetically, many prefer to have the stem with negative rise (angled downward in relation to the steerer tube).

However, most rational people recognize you should position the stem to achieve the best bike fit for you, even if it means angled upward.

The whole "flip it" became a joke, and is usually used sarcastically on this forum.

Depends on the forum your in. On this forum it refers to flipping a stem to the opposite angle.

On Classic & Vintage it means buying an old bike at a yard sale or thrift store, cleaning it up, repairing it and selling it for more than you paid.

On the New Jersey regional forum it refers to communicating with the cager who just cut you off, telling him he's Number 1.

I typed up a whole thing and then realized you said it correctly

Bikeforums seems to produce some strange bike setups, but in the "real world", at least around here, in the circles I ride with, bikes are usually set up with stems "flipped" down. Anyway, here is mine in the down position (84 degree, so -6):

As in when someone posts a pic of a nice bike, with a bunch of drop to the bars, and the first response is "flip it."

An example of a stem angled up:

It's 6 degrees up. The amount of drop is where I want it for the riding we'll do with the bike.

I could get the stem flatter by flipping it down, and imporve the look a tad. But running a cf steerer on a tandem, I prefer to minimize the amount of spacers.
