That has a lot of overlap with the information on his site, so I think it's the same person. Traversing back in time for skipechert.com on the Wayback Machine is instructive. There was one snapshot where the contents of his server files were exposed (basic directory listing, not a web page). This obviously has nothing to do with vintage bikes, just interesting for nerds like me who have dabbled on the web. If you do this sort of thing, it's instructive to see what can leak out if you're not careful.

Not so far. My next step would be to send a postcard or make a phone call. I'm quite hesitant to do the latter.

Calling is much less of an imposition if it's in the spirit of making sure someone is OK when there are many signs that suggest otherwise.

I suspect his first name is Douglas. I matched up this contact info on skipechert.com (via the Wayback Machine)

I tried the business number, got a fax machine or modem. I waited awhile to see if it would give up and transfer to voice, but it never did. I then called the cell phone and left a voice mail.

Where does that leave us? Should we send a letter to the Renton address asking for permission to use the existing content?
I reconstituted the site on my web server and privately asked a few people to "check my work." I've not released the URL broadly. I've been loathe to do that because the original site is clearly copyrighted.

Here is the solution to all your problems.
Go to this site......
https://www.restoration.bike/bike-ca...#Trek_Catalogs
Bring up whatever catalog you want. Hit your basic "Download" button on your browser. Go to your download folder and you will notice a nice pdf file of what you just downloaded. Create a dedicated folder on your PC of Mac (ugh), move all these pdf files into that folder at your convenience and rename them in a manner that makes sense for you.
Now you have them forever (unless your machine crashes and you don't have a backup)!!!!

True, if all your problems were lack of Trek catalogs/brochures. vintage-trek.com has/had lots of other stuff, pix of interesting Trek bikes, tables of component dates, Trek serial number decoder, that sort of thing. Personally, all I ever used was the component dates page and the serial number decoder. Until I rebuilt the website I had no idea there were so many PDFs (I count 185).

These are working for me.......
Serial numbers======> https://web.archive.org/web/20210425...ialNumbers.htm
Models, Years, Colors======> https://web.archive.org/web/20210421...l_numbers1.htm
Get a 7 day free trial to Adobe Acrobat and convert these htm webpages to pdf files and then you never have to worry about getting future access to these with Wayback Machine. On the serial number page, you will also have to convert each dedicated serial number page from the embedded chart (TABLE I 1980-1986) if you are selecting from the serial number range that fits the number you are looking for. Those individual pages in the chart show all the size and model information for each specific serial number.

My frame, which I initially thought to be either a 1985 or 1986 400 - turned out to be a 1985 470.

A brief note: the scans there are nice, but they're not necessarily 100% complete. Specifically, the 1985 Touring catalog there appears to be missing the page that listed the 470 and 660S. I found that page in the version of the Trek catalog at the Retrobike site.

Responding to your post, I am not familiar with the 660S, only the 660 which is a racing model one step below the 760 and is included in the racing catalog. The models/years/colors sheet does not show that 660S model either. I use serial numbers first and then model/years/colors (assuming original paint which on older Treks is pretty much the norm) to validate models and years. Relative to your 400, the model/years/colors sheet shows the 85 to be "blue with white or yellow decals, also scarlet" while the 470 would be black with red decals. Is one of those combinations your bike's colors and is the paint original? Below is the model/years/colors sheet from wayback machine...... have a look. Below that is the serial number sheet for 1985. Often a serial number for the early part of one year can actually be in the latter part of the prior year's list as production for an upcoming year often started before a current model year had actually ended. That would be an explanation if your serial number actually predates the 1985 list.

Catalog containing the 1985 660S and 470 can be found at
https://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2...985_20trek.pdf
It's the first bike in the touring section of that catalog scan. The 660S is the second bike pictured on the same page. Specifications for each are on the next page following the photos.
According to the catalog link you posted on the restoration.bike site, the 470 is listed as a Trek touring model and was made in only 4 years: 1985, 1996, 1997, and 1998. I think the folks at restoration.bike may have missed scanning a page or two in the touring section of the1985 catalog (or perhaps the catalog they scanned was missing a page). Fortunately, the Retrobike site had a scan of the 1985 Trek catalog containing those pages.

Thanks for the info. I have never seen those pages in the catalogs on the vintage Trek site and I have accessed that site for probably 15 years. I would consider these two models (470 and 660S) to be more sport models than touring as they certainly do not have the elongated wheel base that exists on the touring models 620 and 720. Their specs mirror the Trek Elance models of 86, 87, & 88. If you look at the charts, the wheelbase length of the 470 and 660S tend more toward the racing side than the touring side. Again, thanks for the info. Very interesting.
Maybe that categorization for the 470 is a mistake re: 1985 (haven't checked the other years). Or perhaps the reason is simply one of those "sacred mysteries" we mere mortals aren't allowed to know.

In this link you can see the 470 and 660s is simply a page gotten out of order during scanning.
The racing models have a background under the model numbers in red and touring purple. You can also see the next purple touring page under the page the 470/660S are on. The next page clearly says "racing specifications" for the 470/660S. The "Touring Models" title page got scanned out of order a couple pages sooner than it should have. All clearly came out of a 3 ring binder. No mystery involved

Edited to add: the same "mystery" may well apply to the 96, 97, and 98 Trek 470s, too. They appear to be more road/sport than touring bikes, but the same site also characterizes them as touring models.

Make perfect sense to me. But that doesn't explain why the restoration.bike site lists the 1985 470 as a touring model vice a racing model. That's the "sacred mystery"- or perhaps mistake - I was referring to.
