Another friend in an accident

Man! This nonsense has gotta stop!

I visited another bike riding friend in the hospital yesterday. Two days ago he got pasted on a ride. Long story, Reader's Digest version: He was making a left-hand turn in traffic, signaled a left turn, a driver didn't see it or him and hit him. Two fractured vertebrae, broken clavicle, road rash on his face, broken rib, punctured lung and pneumothorax. A hot mess, IOW. For all that, he's grateful he's not hurt worse. But he's in a lot of pain, which he says the morphine barely touches. He's got a great family, a great church and LOTS of friends, all of whom are praying for him and pulling for him.

I met him on a century ride. He's 72, and rides like a man at least 20 years younger.

Please, Please, PLEASE be careful out there riding!

This makes two riding friends smacked by cars while riding just this year.

Damn, that sucks. Best wishes to him and his entire family and circle of friends.

Did he get hit from behind, or was this a cross sort of collision?

I hate making left turns from medium-to-fast roads at intersections (or driveways -- even worse) that lack turn pockets, traffic controls, or both.

Cross, if I understood him correctly.

That's what lungs and vocal cords are for. I am not shy about using them when necessary (fortunately, not often).

That really sucks. Did he have the right of way and hit by oncoming car, or hit from behind?

Just goes to show you, you can't be too defensive on a bike.

In 1989 my wife and I took off on a tour and rode 4000 miles on our then-new tandem. After a month of riding, we decided to take the train home to Davis from Seattle. One block from the train station back home, at 6:00 AM, the only car on the road ran a stop sign and nearly got us. That was our only close call all month. Some welcome home that was.
