Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

s far as the risk of pushing the star nut down, the biggest thing I would be afraid of is it pushing the star nut too far and it dropping out the bottom of the sleeve, then it living in your fork crown forever. I'd probably want to use a star nut setter with a depth stop and trim steer tube > push star nut down > trim steer tube > push star nut down. The entire sleeve breaking free would be no big deal IMO so long as it didn't take out any carbon with it.
Thank you! I'll try to fashion a feeler out of wire. I don't think my old valve gap things will work. I've never seen a star nut tool with a depth stop, but I could also make one with a hose clamp. One of my fears is knocking the sleeve down beyond where I could retrieve it. I could get another one easily enough, but there might be further complications.

Well looks like this cold has gone from Liz, to me, to baby. First time she's gotten sick. Congested cough, sneezing, sleeping poorly.

She woke up earlier than usual today so I just decided to hop off the trainer early and help out Liz a bit. I'm still on my self-prescribed easy week anyway, so that checks out. Liz and I are on the mend, hopefully baby is soon.

Yeah this is more of a broader human issue. Same problem with hikers, leaving trash etc. In Scouts they taught us to "Leave no Trace". I like to take it a step further and take a piece of trash out with me, especially if I encounter it on foot.

The worst trail trashers in PHX are dog walkers. Seems like they get tired of carrying their bag of dog poop.

When Bob was here he found the spoke nipple I had lost inside the rim, when replacing a broken spoke. He found it by sound. The nipple remains inside the rim. So it’s not the end of the world

Plenty of those in my neighborhood as well, which is despicable. It's otherwise a pretty clean, quite and safe neighborhood. People suck.

The top of the insert shows signs of having been trimmed previously, too, so it could theoretically end right below the current nut position (bad for the stem clamp). Might just live with it.

Went out for an easy paced ride today, including my friend who crashed 6 weeks ago. He can do easy rides but has pain with bumps and cannot stand up and pedal, too much pressure on his left wrist still causes discomfort.

After lunch we are gonna try to get a new tire for the fit due to mrs datlas’ pinch flat from Wednesday.

I was just outside, hanging laundry. As I approached the house I saw the gardener’s bike (that I gave her a few years ago) had the qr skewers tightened incorrectly. I called her out to show her and while I was down there, I happened to read ‘Santθ’ on the front hub. Didn’t check the rear. That bike had been my town bike for a year or two, before I gave it to her. The rear is likely Santθ as well. I remember building up a set at one time.

I went out on the mtb again, this time following a marked trail. I had seen the end and the beginning, so figured ot to be fairly short. 1:45 in, and pretty tired, I came to a fork. 40 to the right, and 20 to the left. I took that to mean km, and went left. And 15 minutes later was back on the hard road.

Too many people around here seem to think, "It's okay! It's natural!", ignoring the fact that it just sits there drying out from April to November and then as soon as the rains come it ALL gets washed down.

I also see bags of it sitting by the trail. It might be people who are planning to come back and pick it up, or it might be people who just didn't want to carry it and decided to leave it. You can't tell by looking at it, and it's easy enough to carry with. And it also provides a weapon, should you need it.......

Speaking of spokes and nipples, mine should be arriving today!!!! This is so exciting!!!

One issue I discovered with the old wheels is that the spokes are threaded all the way through the nipples, so I can't use either a screwdriver or the nipple driver I just bought to unscrew the old spokes. I'll have to loosen each one quite some way with a spoke wrench first.

First World Wheel Problems.

Still positive this morning, but no fever for a number of days and HR and HRV are both in the Green. So, I looked up CDC Guidance and I was surprised to discover that they DON'T say to wait till you test negative. Just "24hr with no fever" and "symptoms improved", so since I had a seminar to give half of, I dragged drove my sorry ass the 2.4 miles to work.

The Younger Boy, who had been trying to avoid us, came up positive this morning, whereas The Older Boy, who has been fatalistic about it and figured he might as well get it and get it over with, is still negative. Go figure.

The Belgian Waffle Ride (San Marcos, CA) is Sunday. I'm doing the 75mi "Wafer" route with one of my best friends. He and I are very evenly matched for fitness and skills right now, and I expect it to be a lot of fun introducing him to the world of gravel racing. I'm feeling better about my fitness this year, compared with when I did this race (my first gravel event) last year. It's going to be cool (mid-40s) at the start, but is expected to warm up into the mid-60s, with no rain. I'm hoping to finish in less than 6 hours.
