Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

S-Works Roubaix SL4 vs Cervelo R5 vs Trek Domane

Itching for new frame. Currently ride Roubaix. My short list includes S-works roubaix sl4, cervelo R5 and trek domane (6series). Discuss differences and YOUR preferences between these 3.

Id choose between the sl4 and the R5. Id lean toward the R5 for the snob in me

But the sl4 is imo the practical choice, for the warranty and i know its comfy yet stiff

What's wrong with the old frame, that you are hoping will be improved with a new frame?

Why do you assume something is "wrong"?

I know. The OP said "itching" for a new frame. Most of us get the "itch". I've brought several new bikes and none were to fix something "wrong"

It doesn't make sense to recommend something without knowing what is lacking in his current frame.

"MY" preferences shouldn't matter, because I'm not going to ride it. What I want from a bike, the kinds of roads in my area, and the bikes I already own will be different than the OP's. Knowing the reason for the replacement provides critical information required to make a viable recommendation.

And of course, there's always the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" thing. Not that anyone wants to actually hear that they could spend $2000+ and not have any meaningful differences, but sometimes you just have to try anyway.

When has the 41 ever needed something to be wrong with a frame or complete bike to do the N+1 thing?

Bill

i'm interested in others' opinions and experience with said bikes, since I only know what I've read and lack first hand experience with any of the three.

OK then.... What would you want to be different about a new frame?

It doesen't make sense to pair the R5 with the domane or the Roubaix. It would be interesting to know how you came to these final three. I prefer the madone to the domane and the tarmac/venge to the Roubaix. So, for me it would be the R5 hands down. That is because I chose the "apple in the orange" comparison.

Tall head tube for more upright ride position, and features that provide ride comfort.

What's your plan for the new bike? I have a lower range Domane and not much experience much other bikes (aside from test rides). The pivoting seatpost feels nice to my novice butt, and I fully accept that this is first generation product and I'm a lab rat for Trek. At least when the frame explodes under me, I can get a free upgrade, right?
