It's a stack of assumptions and guesses. I'm fairly certain that they're just looking at your best 20-min power (probably within 6 weeks) and then taking 95% of that. If you don't have a power meter or a location suitable for that type of steady output (7+ mile stretch that's relatively uninterrupted), they're FTP estimate isn't going to be very good.

edited to add: that's not to say that you need a power meter. You can train without one, but it's just a tool to be a little more effective.

12 speed is my favorite configuration in road bikes. Six speed freewheels and cassettes are decidedly not easy to find anymore.

It just feels right. I really prefer a six speed rear to a seven, for no real reason. And frankly, I don't have much experience with five. I have a five speed corncob here, that I've been awaiting the right application for. Whatever I have back there, I never use them all, unless I'm in the US, where they have actual hills. What makes friction shifting preferable to indexed? Same question/same answer.
Edit: Actually, the six speed rear more easily fits into 126 mm dropout spacing as well.

Are the grooves for the freehub all equal? That's what I'm looking for. Cassette wise. I can buy new six speed cassettes here, but the don't fit my freehubs.
