Can the shifter be removed from MTB brake lever-shifter combo
Gf's bike has Shimano ST-M310 brake lever and shifter in one unit. I had no idea these existed for MTB. Anyways, the the right side shifter mechanism broke, but the brake lever is fine, and I'd like to replace only the shifter mechanism if possible.
Does this unit come apart or am I looking at replacing the whole unit along with the brake lever too?

Doesn't look like you can get a replacement shifter for that setup.

These can be opened, & then find out whats broken or gone wrong, buying or finding NEW parts is a non starter, the trouble with a replacement is you will need to buy a pair, I've opened stripped serviced many, but I don't think you will be lucky enough to find parts, but until you stripped it & know the problem is ? maybe a LBS depending on its size & if its been in operation for some time, & has a workshop may have some old / spares lever units, around & when people then upgrade systems you may be lucky to find a 2nd hand one.

The lever that increases tension will now only shift 2 gears in one throw, instead of 3. It won't engage shift until I the lever is pushed way way back. By the time it starts to engage, I would have expected the amount of lever travel would have shifted 3 gears already. But then I push further and it will shift 2 gears.

Sounds like your cable may be binding. Clean/lube or replace the cable so it moves freely first through the hosings/tensioners. Make sure there are no kinks or sharp bends in the hosing.

Try blasting it out with something like speed-degreaser or other not-so-toxic aerosolized solvent. If you don't care about your health or the environment, try automotive brake cleaner. Work the shifter up and down the range. Should get better. Then lube it as best you can with light oil.

This is a common Shimano problem. The mechanism inside the shifter gets gummed up and the pawls no longer catch or release as designed. Take the shifter cover off and clean the moving bits with triflow or other light oil. Watch how the pawls work and you should be able to spot where it is hung up.once that part is loosened and working freely, your shifter should be fine.

And environment safe paint thinner too, which I found useful for cleaning grease from my plastic garage sink.

Take whatever covers off you can, blast a 1/2 can of WD through, relube. This usually returns the shifter to proper operation. Might as well do them both too.

Seems to happen with a lot of Shimano stuff, independent of series, mtn/road, etc. Mostly, it's an age and disuse thing.

To the original question, I have used a Dremel to cut off the shifter pod in the past on these Shimano integrated lever/shifter combo.

These shifters are used daily...about 4000-5000 miles a year city riding over the past 5 years or so

I shot some PB Blaster in the shifter and it seems to work ok now.
I then tried to put Super Lube grease in there with a pick, but not sure how much got where because there isn't much free space inside to push the grease around. Any other lubricants that would work well in there? I'm thinking chain lube is too light.
