Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It wasn't too bad, really. A bit slippery trying to get up on the trail in road cleats. We wanted to try it because we love that climb and it's been closed to cars since 2018 when a fire and subsequent rains damaged the road. It was almost ready to reopen when the big rains wiped it out. Much worse than the last time.

A couple old pics. Gate at the bottom.

Inside the gate looking toward the top.

Looking back from the top on a hazy day.

"Washout" implies the existence of H2O. Which raises the question: where would such water have come from on the west coast?

Stop. Don’t you read or see weather reports? California was getting biblical rain storms during the winter, especially So Cal.

This. The current year was pretty wet, but last year was just plain nuts.

In the Bay Area, some of our favorite cycling roads are still either closed or reduced to one lane with traffic controls.

The atmospheric rivers just kept on coming:

Yeah. 84 isn't supposed to fully reopen till later this month, more than a year after the washout.

Come ride that charity ride with me next Saturday. 42/1800 for us old guys or you can do 62/25006 with the young guys. The women are doing 20 miles. 8 am start. Lunch after.

I went home last night. Much needed. I would like to do that ride with you, but Saturday is the first of many test. I’ll prolly be too stressed out to do anything.

They’re telling me that stage nine is live, this time of day! Can it be so?

In other news, we have entered the point of the elipse. The sun, instead of just pooching up, was fully above the horizon at 5:30, and much higher at 6:30. The days are getting longer quicker. 98 degrees, Maximo’s limit for moving into the fans, will come well before noon today. It will be a long day sequestered under the fans. A high of 106 today.

Defeated by a road yesterday -- humiliating.

Strava says the grade maxes out at 25%. I was standing in my lowest gear, doing 6 W/kg, worried I was about to topple over. I bailed out in a driveway, then walked the last bit, unable to clip in again.

Photos never do justice to the steepness, but here's my moment of defeat:

Live to fight another day.

Plus, West Old la Honda is still closed. Mt. Hamilton Road has a one-lane section with a traffic signal, which makes a mess of segment times.

I didn't know West OLH was closed! It's one of my favorite roads - little or no traffic, great vistas, and just steep enough.

That happened to me when I tried to go up Smugglers Notch in Vermont.

What’s your bailout gear combo??

Waiting to switch buses. This is at the corner. I tried to explain it’s significance to Mrs datlas.
