Sunday...Mt. Lowe - Wilson - Toll Road loop on the gravel bike (25mi, 4800'). I've been wanting to do this ride for a long time, but have been trying to find a time that is not too hot or too cold. We started out under cool and grey skies, up the steep pavement of Chaney Trail and the lower part of the Mt. Lowe Rd. Once on dirt, the grade eases up, but are some sections that are loose and chunky, requiring that you keep on the power to maintain progress. Shortly before reaching Inspiration Point, we got above the cloud layer, and enjoyed the sunshine and blue skies.

Nice ride! I've been wanting to do this route, but all my cycling buddies are weak sauce climbers, so I might have to do it solo. Is 2x 30:36t gravel low gearing adequate to climb it? It seems a bit more relaxing not having to deal with traffic if taking the road route up to Mt. Wilson!

On Sunday I did 27 miles and 2000 feet of climbing. My legs felt good and I was flying up the climbs. Though on one hill climb, another cyclist saw me coming fast and upped his pace. I caught up to his wheel when we got to the top, but couldn't pass him. I guess he didn't want to get dropped!
On Monday I did 21 miles and 2100 feet of climbing doing hill repeats at Griffith. Mondays are the best there, because there's hardly any traffic. It's getting to the point I rarely take breaks other than to enjoy the view from after climbing. I'm trying to increase my tolerance for climbing longer distances!

Started off at 1000 with misty low clouds and ended in partly sunny skies in the Puente-Whittier Hills.
Must be a banner year for squirrels. On constant guard for the suicidal ones. Talked to a couple of ruff looking coyotes on the top of Turnbull Canyon crossing onto the spur to the Skyline Trail. One turned and studied me for a moment then continued. Guess I need to work on my war face.
44 miles and a mile of climb.

Saturday I did 28 miles and 2200 feet of climbing over at Griffith. I encountered a fast cyclist and I tried holding his wheel on the climb, but my HR was already in the red and I couldn't hold pace after about 10-15 minutes. Even though I'm constantly climbing, I know there are cyclists who are that much faster. Sunday, I did another quick ride over at the Pasadena hills doing 21 miles and 2000 feet of climbing.
I know there's still room for improvement, because I've done group rides with older, strong climbers. I think I need to start figuring out a structured training program for myself!

Saturday - 35mi solo road ride on LART and Arroyo, in the opposite direction I usually go. 80+deg temps also bumped up my HR, and things were running about 10bpm over normal while riding at a tempo effort. Enjoyable ride, though.
Sunday - MTB ride aborted before I even go to the dirt, due to an urgent issue at home that demanded my attention. I probably could have tried to ride again in the afternoon, but didn't find the motivation.

47-miler starting above dana point harbor at noon. blue lantern north and wiggled over to pacific island dr. still a woofer that one.
semi-recovered on the descent of pid down to alicia pkwy. hooked up for a few miles northbound with the aliso creek bike trail (almost missed the turnoff
since i always approach from the other direction). moulton and lake forest nw, crossed over the 133 and rolled thru quail hill area.
a left onto shady canyon and took that handy-dandy bike path over the hill into turtle rock, heading towards uci via campus and the san diego creek bike path.
sdcbp into newport beach back bay to pch area. a mix of bayside, pch, glenneyre and pch again to the start. overcast (except for 7-10 mins in the 133 area)
the entire time with a über-lite drizz the first 20 mins or so. nibbled a bit on balboa island but it was ridiculously ridiculous on a tuesday so retreated. bayside dr. was really nice and mellow...two cars passed me close to the top in corona del mar but had those few miles to myself around 2:30pm. pch from cdm to the starbucks/descent into/main beach/iconic lifeguard tower/laguna beach village wasn't bad. once into the village, it was as expected so quickly went a block over to parallel glenneyre
to miss the worst of the village traffic. ended up reuniting with pch at nyes place. nice little 125 yard construction project just south of the aliso creek beach area on the uphill and southbound side of pch made things "interesting" for a minute. things definitely chilled out on southbound pch approx a mile north of crown valley pkwy.
did get yelled at (for the first time in a long time) in a derogatory manner by a young, solo male in the nyes place area of pch. of course, caught up to him-twice-in the span of two lights. windows unsurprisingly rolled up and zero eye contact both times. haha. i had a s...-eating grin both times for him. not the fastest ride but a good time.

For Father's Day, I treated myself to a 34 mile ride and 2200 feet of climbing up the Hollywood Sign. I had to ride it solo, because all my bike buddies are weak sauce! Lol

made it back over to scr-land. those trees on the upper part of the scr descent still need a serious haircut. upper modjeska canyon rd. is still amongst the most chill rides in all of socal.
