Wow
The poll didn't turn out like I thought it was going to. Education is strong here, but technology-related jobs by over 1/3 was unexpected. My initial curiosity was based upon what type of work field allowed you to commute by bike; it just seemed education would be ideal, therefore was I was expecting. Thanks all for the responses so far!

I'm staff counsel for a state agency, but you don't have either legal or government in your choices, so I couldn't select anything on the list.

My apologies, the poll only allows for 10 entries, I just did a Google for the most popular career areas. Now I can't modify it...

Ah, "targets"
I didn't get educated in drawing tolerances until a few years into my job. If I'd gotten it in school it might have swayed me to inspection and GD&T. It makes you feel pretty clever to create or interpret feature control frames, like you are leaving or deciphering clues to solve the puzzle faster
Zing!
wsgts I think you are perhaps also getting a cross section of people who didn't leave forums for Facebook

Couch sitter. In the Before Times, clerical; I was secretary to a small company that provides day services to adults with developmental disabilities, on paid leave since March. Management is currently attempting to re-work the program so our clients can get out of their houses but not come to our building.
I still commute twice a week to water the plants and a bit of office work.

I don't see a listing for what I do in the poll. I am a golf equipment professional. Believe it or not there is a demand for this work. It is kinda like being a bike mechanic for golf equipment. Smiles, MH

Where is owning your business option? I would have thought that would have been used by a lot of people here, including me. I'm on my second business after selling my last one, the second one is not even closely related to the first one...I have to have change in my life. Anyway I know own several rental properties and manage those as well as maintenance. I also do some contract work but cannot discuss that.

I think technology is not too surprising, and my category. I would think the primary bias is working in a fixed location most of the time. That can include plant shift workers, plant engineers, product engineers, consulting engineers, software programmers, IT, technicians(couldn't even begin to list the subsets here), etc.
Regarding plants around here that I visit for work, they are located in mostly industrial areas with heavy truck traffic. Rough roads with no shoulders with 50 mph speed limits, meaning cars and trucks are doing 60 mph. I've seen personally many a truck accident, and the aftermath of other accidents around these areas. During rush hour, there is no where for a bike to be but on the grass or sidewalk. Plus, most plant workers I know here are so worn out after working a 10 to 12 hour shift (always overtime pre-pandemic) they don't have the energy to pedal back home.
Hard to say about technicians, because maybe we are talking about different kinds of technicians. I'm a traveling tech and I carry about 250 lbs. of tools in my van for work. Other techs I know may carry the same loadout, or if they work on lighter equipment they may carry 1/3rd the weight in tools, but carry a lot of supplies and parts in their vehicles. Plus, the distances covered in a day doesn't lend itself to bicycles. That basically explains why I can't be a bicycle commuter*, even though I really wish I could.
*Which means I didn't vote in the poll.
