Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Euro-dad considered cycling to be something one simply "did" in the city for transportation and sedate exercise. He taught me to stay out of the door zone, take the lane when necessary, and stop on red. Yellow cabs were, of course, plentiful, even Checkers with jump seats.

Pre-surgery, I would normally live in 145 - 147. After the hernia op (early Jan.) I lost some muscle and got used to seeing 143 - 145 lbs, which was nice I guess, but that's not normal or healthy for me. I was weak.
I cannot fathom weighing 147 pounds.

I couldn't believe when I visited NYC in 2002, we were in a Town Car and our driver got in a shouting match with another Town Car, whose driver stopped and opened his door, then our driver opened his door, sprang out of the car and pulled a knife, chased the other driver back into his car. Pretty exciting start to my first visit since 1980

For me to weigh 147 I’d need to shed 20 pounds of muscle + some fat

I bet a majority of patients there don't even look at the care summaries, but it annoys me.

Is this bad?

Trust me, you want nothing resembling my 147 as it is currently constituted.

Now that there is some funny stuff. The biggest and bestest cover band getting covered.

My Stingray days were in LA. As is always the case there, being mobile is key. I think the mass transit system may have improved, but odds are......

C reactive protein is a nonspecific marker of inflammation. One would expect yours to be high, unfortunately. You can follow it as an estimate of how active your disease is.

I agree: Only "difficult" patients read their records. "Pleasant" ones don't.

Those 2-speed coaster brake hubs were factory installed on several adult bikes way back when. I remember working on them. Sturmey Archer hubs, I think. Sturmey Archer still make them.

I didn’t start cycling until I was 29 years old, and that was partially due to the fact that I happened to witness the very first five borough bike tour as it came through my neighborhood, and I said to myself “hey, that looks like fun“. The following year I had my first bike and taught myself how to ride safely in the city. Actually most of the time I didn’t ride safely at all. But I guess I survived.

never had the urge to bike on the streets of manhattan - or central park … much too busy … the path down on the hudson does look appealing though

I do get the urge to throw a ball around or play softball when we walk around / through central park … always lotsa games going on

I'm telling you, my doc visits are always longer than anyone else's. We have nice conversations with lots of give and take, and no a one has ever referred to me as a "she" in my chart. Aside from being an ******* for a living, I must be a pleasant patient.
